September Gardening Jobs

Maincrop potatoes

Maincrop potatoes will be ready to harvest once the tops have died off. Two weeks before you lift the crop, cut the top growth back to ground level. Once lifted, leave to dry for 2-3 hours before storing. Spring cabbages and winter onion sets can now be planted. Continue to harvest your apples, pears, raspberries and blackberries. Berries can be frozen for use later in the year.

Heuchera

Once your summer bedding has finished, any gaps can be filled with hardy perennials such as Salvia, Heuchera, Erysimum and Geranium or spring bulbs. Our Garden Centre is full of spring bulbs for you to choose from and September is an excellent time to start choosing them for your own gardens. We have a huge range of Tulips, Alliums, Daffodils and much, much more.

Pyracantha berries

Wildlife in your garden still needs your help. Late berrying shrubs such as Pyracantha, Berberis and Lonicera provide a valuable food source for birds. Sedums are vital for bees and butterflies, helping them to build up their reserves for winter.

Lawn maintenance

September is the time for getting on top of your lawn maintenance. A beautiful lawn is at the heart of any garden. When it looks lush and green, it's the perfect complement to colourful beds. See our guide on lawn care.

Congested perennials

Congested clumps of perennials such as Agapanthus, Euphorbias and Geums can be safely divided in Autumn. This will help encourage flowering next year and stop them from taking over your borders.
