Heuchera are resilient and versatile, evergreen or semi-evergreen perennials grown for their interesting, colourful foliage in a variety of vibrant shades. There are a wide selection of varieties available, some with a single foliage colour, sometimes with ruffled edges to the leaves, whilst others are two-toned with a bold distinctive blotch of contrasting colour in the centre of each leaf. Lighter coloured heuchera generally prefer partial or dappled shade to provide some protection from the sun, especially in warmer southern parts of the UK, whilst the foliage of darker-coloured varieties is most vivid with more direct sunlight. They also produce delicate spikes of bell-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red or white, giving them their common name 'coral bells'. Low growing to around 30-50cm tall, Heuchera are popular plants for adding tone and texture to borders, rockeries or patio containers. Best grown in groups of the same variety to create stunning 'waves' of colour, they're easy to grow, just requiring minor spring foliage maintenance to keep them looking tidy.
