Flowering hedging plants

Hedges don’t have to be green blocks that look the same all year round. Flowering hedges are a great way to add colour, interest and structure to the perimeter of your garden, or internally to segment different parts of your outdoor space or even to edge paths and walkways. There are a wide range of varieties to choose from with different shapes, styles and colours of flowers and of course different eventual heights, depending on what you’re looking to achieve. Nectar rich flowers also have the added benefit of attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies and other wildlife into your garden. Some flowering varieties such as berberis and holly have thorny stems or prickly leaves to keep out intruders, whilst others such as dogwood are deciduous and best known for their brightly coloured bark that brings a bright splash of colour to dark winter days. Scented hedging plants such as lavender and syringa are well suited to bringing a rich perfume into the garden, ideal for edging pathways, whilst pyracantha produces not only flowers but also glossy berries for adding further colour and interest later in the season and helping attract wildlife into the garden. Several rhododendrons work well as flowering hedges for a more informal, woodland garden style appearance.
