Hedging plants are the cornerstone of any garden, creating an attractive boundary that has a big impact on privacy and enjoyment in your outdoor space. Hedges provide a visibility screen and reduce noise pollution, all whilst providing a home and shelter for wildlife and nesting birds. Careful planning and preparation is needed when establishing a hedge, starting with which types of plants you choose. There are lots of options available with different eventual heights, styles, ornamental features and specific uses. Evergreens such as cherry laurel provide a solid year-round block of foliage colour with alternatives such as photinia red robin delivering striking red young growth for variety and interest. Mixed native hedging gives a traditional country hedgerow appearance with greater variety and variation given the carefully selected mix of species. The spiny branches of berberis make them an effective impenetrable, intruder proof hedge (just make sure you use a good pair of gardening gloves when planting!). And varieties such as yew can be tightly clipped to give a more formal appearance with the added bonus of fleshy red berries from late summer. Hedges can also be used in the interior of your garden, perhaps to delineate different sections, in the knot garden or to edge paths and walkways. In these situations, low growing hedging such as box, fuchsia and lavender come to the fore.
