Low growing plants
Low growing plants are perfect for using as ground cover over patches of unsightly bare ground. They carpet the ground with minimal fuss, suppressing weeds, adding form and structure to borders, as well as stabilising the soil and controlling erosion on banks and slopes. Most low growing plants are low maintenance but there is a balance to be struck between choosing plants vigorous enough to cover the planting area without being so invasive that it becomes a maintenance headache to keep them within their designated bounds. The optimal choice will depend on the size of the area you need to cover and the need to choose plants that are suitable for the soil type and light conditions at your site. If you have a larger area to plant up, choose a mix of evergreen, deciduous, flowering and berrying varieties to deliver autumnal colour, spring interest and attractive blossoms.
