Bring sunshine to your borders, pots and rockeries with Alyssum Gold Bullet, a compact, low-maintenance perennial that boasts brilliant golden-yellow blooms in early spring. Perfect for gardeners seeking reliable colour with minimal fuss, this variety is known for its hardy nature and attractive mounding habit, making it a favourite for edging paths, brightening containers or softening stonework in a rock garden.
Striking Colour
Vibrant clusters of golden-yellow flowers appear from early to mid-spring, brightening up any garden space just as winter fades.
Compact Growth
Forms neat, cushion-like mounds approximately 15–20cm in height and spread, ideal for front-of-border planting.
Attracts Pollinators
Loved by bees and other beneficial insects, helping to support garden biodiversity.
Evergreen Foliage
Grey-green leaves offer year-round interest, even after flowering has finished.
Rock gardens and gravel beds
Fronts of borders
Edging for pathways or flower beds
Containers, pots and troughs
Wall crevices and dry banks
Alyssum Gold Bullet is easy to grow and well-suited to gardeners of all experience levels.
Sunlight
Prefers full sun, though it will tolerate light shade.
Soil
Thrives in well-drained, even poor or sandy soils. Avoid overly rich or damp conditions, which may reduce flowering.
Watering
Water well after planting, then only during prolonged dry spells once established.
Pruning
After flowering, trim back lightly to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth the following season.
Pots and Containers
Gold Bullet is an excellent choice for pots, planters and troughs. Ensure good drainage by using a gritty compost mix, and raise containers slightly off the ground to prevent waterlogging. It pairs beautifully with spring bulbs and trailing plants.
Seasonal Interest
Expect flowering to begin in March and continue into May. As one of the earliest spring bloomers, it complements other spring favourites such as tulips, muscari and primroses. Its low-growing nature also makes it an excellent underplanting companion.
Maintenance and Care
This variety is very low maintenance. Cut back spent blooms and remove any tired foliage in early summer. In colder regions, a mulch may help protect the root zone, though the plant is hardy across much of the UK.
Alyssum Gold Bullet is an indispensable spring performer for the everyday gardener. Its cheerful blooms, resilience and versatility make it a garden staple you’ll come back to year after year. Whether spilling over a stone wall or brightening a patio pot, it’s a little plant with a big impact.
Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.
As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

From late autumn onwards and dependant on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.
Alpines are a group of perennials that generally grow in rocky conditions at high altitudes.
As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.
It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.
By using this simple guide and a little time, alpines can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
