A neat, evergreen shrub with year-round beauty and spring charm
Andromeda 'Compacta', also known as Pieris japonica 'Compacta', is a compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub that adds structure and elegance to the garden all year round. Beloved for its glossy foliage, attractive shape, and delicate, bell-shaped flowers in spring, this variety is particularly well-suited to smaller gardens, containers, and mixed borders. Its tidy form and all-season interest make it a standout in any garden setting.
Compact Growth – Reaches around 60–90cm in height and spread, ideal for smaller spaces
Evergreen Foliage – Glossy, leathery leaves remain attractive all year
Spring Flowers – Clusters of creamy-white, urn-shaped flowers appear in early to mid-spring
Seasonal Colour – New leaf growth often emerges in shades of bronze or red before maturing to green
Low Maintenance – Requires little pruning or special care
Position:
Best grown in partial shade, although it will tolerate full sun in cooler regions. Avoid hot, exposed positions.
Soil:
Prefers acidic, moist but well-drained soil. Ideal for ericaceous beds or containers with ericaceous compost. Avoid alkaline soils.
Watering:
Keep well-watered during dry periods, especially in the first year after planting. Mulching helps retain moisture and maintain soil acidity.
Maintenance:
Minimal pruning required. You can remove spent flower spikes and lightly trim to maintain shape after flowering if needed.
Shady borders and woodland-style gardens
Containers with ericaceous compost
Foundation planting near entrances or patios
Underplanting larger trees or shrubs
Mixed beds with other acid-loving plants like rhododendrons and heathers
Hardy down to around -15°C (RHS H5)
Deer and rabbit resistant
Flowers are attractive to early pollinators
Pairs beautifully with ferns, azaleas, and camellias
Add elegance and all-season appeal to your garden with Andromeda 'Compacta' – a graceful shrub that provides reliable beauty in a manageable size.
Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.
As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

From late autumn onwards and dependant on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.
