Plants by Type:

We sell most of our plants in pots, meaning they can be planted at any time of the year providing the ground is not frozen or waterlogged and it’s not excessively windy. Between late October and the end of March (the ‘dormancy period’ for plants) we also sell bare root plants, supplied without any soil around the roots. Bare root plants can be a cost effective option, especially for hedging or when planting up larger areas, but you’ll need to venture out into the garden during the winter to plant them.

Plants for different Conditions

If you’re not really sure what type of garden plants you’re looking for and just know you have a spot in the garden where you’d like to add some colour and interest, we have a wide range of categories where you can shop plants suitable for your conditions that should help. Our categories span plants for sun or shade; hardy plants for cold, exposed gardens; drought tolerant plants that require less watering (often one of the most backbreaking jobs in the garden!); and plants for different types of soil such as clay, particularly acidic or alkaline soils, dry or chalky ground. We even have a special category of easy to grow plants for beginners including varieties that will be forgiving if you don’t give them quite the right care and attention and will put up with a bit of neglect now and again. Plants for a Purpose

Another way we help you find the perfect plant for your garden is providing the ability to shop plants for a particular purpose. Perhaps you’re specifically looking for a plant with a rich perfume to position next to an entrance or doorway, along a path or in the sensory garden to bring a fabulous fragrance to your outdoor space – our fragrant plants category is for you. You may be looking for ground cover plants to create a low carpet of foliage to clothe bare patches of ground in the border or help control erosion on banks and slopes. We of course have a wide range of hedging plants, perfect for creating a privacy screen with specific sections for evergreen hedging, intruder proof hedging with thorns or spikes and native hedging for a traditional, country appearance. Our low maintenance plants will look good over a long period of time without needing a lot of fussing over; they’re not thirsty, needy or prone to insects and diseases. We often get asked which are the best wildlife attracting plants to create a haven for wildlife in your garden and the best plants for gifts or plants with peoples names, so have created sections for these too. Plants by Location

Maybe there is a certain part of the garden that you’d like a plant to fill. Perhaps you’re creating or have a few gaps in the rockery garden where you need some rockery garden plants – rockery conifers, flowering perennials and wispy grasses are popular choices. Container gardening is increasingly popular and can be particularly useful in smaller gardens or areas of hardy standing – try shopping our plants for containers. Climbing plants for pergolas, arches and fences are invaluable for adding vertical ascent and will give a big impact on a modest footprint in smaller gardens. If you’re gardening in a sea-side location and need outdoor plants that will stand up to salt-laden air and ocean spray, our coastal garden plants will be perfect for you. In recognition of the increase in number of people living in cities, we’ve created a special section on urban city garden plants that will provide a fabulous display of foliage and flowers whilst coping with city pollution and helping provide an important habitat for wildlife. Plants by Season of Interest

Finally, we have simple sections where you can shop by season of interest, if you’re looking for a garden plant that will be looking at it’s best at a particular time of the year – spring, summer, autumn or winter. Many gardeners like to choose plants for garden borders that show their best ornamental features such as flowers, berries, interesting foliage colours, vibrant bark or seed pods at times of the year when they’re most often in the garden. Alternatively, you might want to pick plants with seasonal interest at different times to give a balanced display across the year – maybe you’ve noticed your garden looks bland through a particular season and need a plant that can add colour and interest at that time of the year. Shopping by season can be particularly useful for container displays where you can chop and change what’s in your display and/or move the display into the limelight when the plants in it are looking their best.
