Slow growing plants
Shop our range of slow growing plants, perfect for the patient gardener who wants to reduce the amount of pruning and clipping that will be required once these gradual growers reach the desired size. Whilst slow growth may be attributed to deficient growing conditions, some plant varieties are naturally slow to mature, developing very gradually to their eventual height and spread and taking longer to flower. In fact, some plants with the best ornamental features and showstopping qualities can take many years to mature – but patience pays off and they will be worth the wait! Most varieties in this section will put on in the region of 5-20cm of new growth per year, depending on the growing conditions, of course. For slow growing hedging, box plants, euonymus, French lavender, holly and Photinia ‘Little Red Robin’ are useful varieties. Slow growing conifers are perfect for the rockery; slow growing trees such as Japanese Maples work well in containers; while shrubs such as spotted laurel, berberis, ceanothus and euonymus help beautify your borders. For acidic soils, pieris plants and rhododendrons make excellent choices and this section would not be complete without mention of the beautiful, stately money puzzle tree, perfect as a slow-growing specimen tree in larger gardens.
