Shop all slow growing plants
Browse our full range of slow growing plants, spanning alpines, azaleas, bamboo plants, conifers, grasses, rhododendrons, shrubs and trees. Varieties in this section gradually mature to their eventual size, typically putting on 5-20cm of new top growth per year, and may take longer to flower than faster growing plants. Once established, they have the benefit of being lower maintenance, requiring pruning or clipping less frequently and not being at risk of aggressively overrunning your, or even a neighbours, garden. Slow growing alpines and slow growing conifers such as Abies balsamea ‘Nana’, Alberta White Spruce and Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Gracilis’ are well suited to the rockery garden where they’ll provide colour and texture and soften hard lines of rocks and stones. Slow growing grasses are perfect for adding architectural flair or, in the case of whispy grasses, a sense of calm and serenity in the sensory garden, general borders or containers. For slow growing hedging, box plants, euonymus, French lavender, holly and Photinia ‘Little Red Robin’ work well, while for acid soil, azaleas, pieris plants and rhododendrons are good choices. Many of the best plants with most impressive ornamental qualities are slow growing – they’ll take many years to mature but will be worth the wait!
