When to Plant Bulbs

Flower bulbs deserve a place in every garden! They’ll add a bright splash of colour and interest to garden borders and can be incorporated into pots and container displays without taking up too much space. They even work well in lawns to naturalise and beautify grassed areas.

The best time to plant bulbs differs for spring flowering bulbs and summer flowering bulbs:

  • Spring flowering bulbs – flower in the spring. Planted between September and November, depending on the variety. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.
  • Summer flowering bulbs – flower in the spring. Generally planted in mid-late spring, when the soil is beginning to warm up. They’ll require a minimum temperature of 13 degrees Celsius before they’ll start to grow.

Bulbs require a well drained soil to succeed. Avoid planting in cold, wet soils, otherwise they are likely to rot. Hardy bulbs, such as Daffodils and Tulips, prefer a warm, sunny site, whereas bulbs from cooler climates, such as Cardiocrinum, prefer a cooler, moist site with dappled shade. Ideally, plant bulbs as soon as possible after purchase – they’ll be shipped to you when the time is right to get them in the ground straight away. Otherwise, they can be stored in the refrigerator until you’re ready to plant.

Comments

It's important to check the weather forecast before buying your bulbs. Bulbs should be planted about 6-8 weeks before the ground freezes, so you want to make sure you have enough time to get them in the ground before the first frost. If the weather is already consistently below freezing in your area, it's too late to plant bulbs for the current season. https://when-to.org/buy/autumn-bulbs/
