Fritillaria Bulbs

Fritillaria are a sub-set of the Lily family of bulbs, comprising both dramatic, exotic-looking large flowerers and smaller, delicate, meadow-style bloomers. They make an interesting, more unusual alternative to tulips and daffodils, often the source of “they’re beautiful – what are they?” questions for neighbours. Originating from the dry mountains of Eastern Europe, they have distinctive, bell-shaped flowers, some showy and bold, others delicate and discreet. They prefer a sunny spot in a moist yet well drained soil and are best planted from September to October. Bulbs are like a little battery with the flower and the leaves right in the middle – allow the foliage to fully die back naturally after flowering to allow them to “recharge” for the following year. See our complete guide to flower bulbs or article on how to plant bulbs for more details.
