Also known as pig speak for the sound it makes when the leaves are rubbed together, Bergenias are perfect for brightening up a spot in dappled shade as an alternative to hostas. They're best grown in groups of 3 or more, planted 30-45cm apart to provide a full effect without over-crowding. Bergenias combine well with coarse ferns in the background to provide a textural change, or maybe with a low growing checkberry or Vinca plants just in front. They are low maintenance and pest and disease free.
