Discover the remarkable hybrid fruit that combines the best of gooseberries and blackcurrants in one exceptional thornless shrub, delivering unique flavour complexity and outstanding garden performance with disease-resistant reliability and impressive productivity for discerning fruit gardeners.
Experience the perfect fusion of two beloved berry flavours with Jostaberry, the innovative hybrid that brings together the sweet richness of gooseberries with the distinctive tang of blackcurrants in one outstanding garden shrub. This remarkable cross creates a vigorous, completely thornless plant that eliminates the harvesting challenges of traditional gooseberries whilst delivering berries larger than blackcurrants with a uniquely complex flavour profile. Developed for superior garden performance and natural disease resistance, this hardy deciduous shrub produces abundant crops of dark reddish-black berries that offer an extraordinary taste experience combining sweet gooseberry notes with subtle blackcurrant undertones. With its robust growth habit, self-fertile characteristics, and exceptional adaptability to British growing conditions, Jostaberry represents the ultimate evolution in hybrid berry cultivation for gardeners seeking both flavour innovation and reliable productivity.
A remarkable cross between blackcurrant and gooseberry that forms a big, hardy, deciduous shrub growing up to 1.8-2m tall and a similar size across. This innovative breeding combines the best characteristics of both parent species whilst eliminating their drawbacks, creating a completely spine-free shrub that delivers superior garden performance and harvesting convenience.
The fruits are larger than a blackcurrant and are dark reddish black in colour, looking like oversized blackcurrants or small gooseberries with a translucent, deep black-purple fruit skin. These impressive berries can grow up to 10 millimetres in diameter, offering substantial harvests with exceptional visual appeal that adds dramatic colour to summer garden displays.
The tangy-sweet berries taste of gooseberries with a slight flavor of black currant and grape, whilst jostaberries taste similar to blackcurrants but are much sweeter. The taste is intermediate between a gooseberry and a blackcurrant, with the gooseberry flavor more dominant in the unripe fruit, and the blackcurrant notes developing as the fruit ripens. This evolving flavour complexity creates a unique tasting experience that develops from tart gooseberry notes to rich, sweet berry satisfaction.
Unlike the gooseberry, jostaberry has no spines, making harvesting easier. This complete absence of thorns transforms berry picking from a challenging task into a pleasant garden activity, making Jostaberry ideal for family gardens and accessible fruit growing where ease of harvest is paramount.
Caring for jostaberries is easy since those who developed the shrub included a built-in resistance or immunity to most berry diseases. This exceptional natural resistance eliminates many common problems associated with gooseberry and currant cultivation, ensuring consistent harvests and healthy plant performance with minimal intervention.
The shrub is self fertile so only one need be grown, though some varieties benefit from cross-pollination. This self-fertility characteristic makes Jostaberry perfect for smaller gardens where space limitations prevent multiple plantings, whilst still delivering abundant fruit production from a single specimen.
Jostaberries are more tolerant of site and soil conditions than many other fruits, but they prefer full sun to part-shade. They grow best with a soil pH between 6.0-6.5 in fertile, loamy and well drained soil that will not dry out. This remarkable adaptability ensures success across diverse garden conditions whilst maintaining excellent productivity.
The fast-growing, long-lived bush can easily grow 6 feet tall, creating substantial productive shrubs that provide excellent garden structure. New branches emerge near the base or in the middle of the plant, ensuring continuous renewal and sustained productivity throughout the plant's extended lifespan.
Pick the berries individually when they are a dark reddish-black, usually in late July/early August. The ripe fruit will hang on the bush in good condition through late summer, providing an extended harvesting period that allows for gradual picking as berries reach perfect ripeness.
Eat fresh, cook or bag up and put straight into the freezer for a taste of summer all year. The berries can be eaten both raw and cooked. The unique flavour profile makes them exceptional for jams, jellies, desserts, and fresh eating, whilst their excellent freezing qualities preserve summer harvests for year-round enjoyment.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade positions with well-draining, moisture-retentive soil rich in organic matter. They require a location with well-drained, slightly acidic soil and a high organic content. Plant 3-5 feet apart from other shrubs to allow proper air circulation and accommodate the mature spread.
Suitable for larger container cultivation with adequate space for the vigorous root system and mature size. Requires substantial containers and consistent moisture management, making it possible to enjoy this exceptional hybrid fruit in confined spaces or on patios.
Provides valuable early nectar from late spring flowers whilst the extended fruiting period offers food resources for wildlife. The thornless nature makes it safer for garden wildlife whilst still delivering the ecological benefits of productive berry shrubs.
Success with Jostaberry centres on providing well-draining, fertile soil with consistent moisture and choosing an appropriate sunny to partially shaded location. Plant during the dormant season with good soil preparation including organic matter incorporation, maintain regular watering during establishment, and apply annual mulching to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Take advantage of the natural disease resistance and self-fertile characteristics, harvest berries when fully dark for optimal flavour development, and your Jostaberry will demonstrate that innovative plant breeding can deliver exceptional garden performance, combining the best characteristics of traditional berries whilst eliminating their limitations to create the ultimate hybrid fruit experience for discerning gardeners seeking both flavour excellence and reliable productivity.
Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries
Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
