Exceptional Fruit Quality

Blackberry 'Adrienne' produces large, firm, long and conical fruits with superb fruit quality and truly excellent flavour. The berries are juicy and sweet with a bright and attractive appearance, making them perfect for fresh consumption straight from the cane. The firm texture means the berries hold their shape well during cooking and preserve beautifully for jams, jellies, and desserts.

Early Season Harvest

Adrienne usually starts to ripen a week after Silvan and a week before Waldo, typically in early July in Southern England. This early fruiting characteristic extends your soft fruit season, providing delicious berries when few other varieties are ready. The extended harvesting period from July to August ensures weeks of fresh fruit for the family.

Thornless Convenience

The growth is completely thorn-free, making 'Adrienne' a pleasure to grow, prune, and harvest. No more painful encounters with thorns when picking berries or maintaining the plant - this variety offers all the benefits of traditional blackberries without the drawbacks. Perfect for family gardens where children may be helping with the harvest.

Position

Blackberry 'Adrienne' needs full sun, soaking up 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. Choose a sheltered location with ample space for vigorous growth and good air circulation to prevent disease. A south or west-facing position against a fence or wall provides ideal growing conditions and support for training.

Soil Conditions

For best results and the sweetest berries, grow blackberry plants in rich, well-drained soil. The ideal soil should have good drainage whilst retaining moisture during dry periods. Heavy clay soils benefit from organic matter additions, whilst sandy soils need compost to improve water retention and fertility.

Soil Preparation

Prepare the planting area by incorporating generous amounts of well-rotted manure or garden compost. Blackberries are heavy feeders and benefit from rich, fertile soil. Ensure drainage is adequate, as waterlogged conditions can lead to root problems and reduced productivity.

Spacing and Support

Although early indications are that it is not as compact as some varieties, it is certainly far less vigorous than most blackberries and a planting distance of 5-6ft should certainly be adequate. Provide sturdy support structures such as post and wire systems or train against existing fences for best results.

Planting Time

Plant bare-root specimens between November and March when dormant, or pot-grown plants throughout the growing season. Spring planting allows establishment before the first growing season, whilst autumn planting gives roots time to establish before spring growth begins.

Planting Method

Dig a hole slightly larger than the root system and plant at the same depth as previously grown. Firm soil gently around roots and water thoroughly after planting. Mulch around the base with organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pruning

Prune in late winter for better productivity and healthy growth. Remove old fruited canes after harvest and tie in new growth for next year's crop. The thornless nature makes pruning much easier and safer than traditional blackberries.

Feeding and Mulching

Top-dress the soil with a mulch of well-rotted horse manure or garden compost every autumn. Apply balanced fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth and fruit development. Regular mulching conserves moisture and gradually improves soil structure.

Watering

Maintain consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly during fruit development. Deep, infrequent watering encourages strong root development. Avoid overhead watering which can promote fungal diseases.

Productivity and Yield

Adrienne has a good crop yield and canes are strong. Adrienne has a moderate growing speed, making this blackberry ideal for limited space gardens whilst still providing substantial harvests. Expect several kilograms of fruit from a mature, well-maintained plant.

Culinary Uses

  • Fresh eating: Perfect for enjoying straight from the cane
  • Baking: Excellent in pies, crumbles, and muffins
  • Preserving: Ideal for jams, jellies, and chutneys
  • Freezing: Firm berries freeze exceptionally well
  • Desserts: Beautiful for tarts, pavlovas, and fruit salads
  • Smoothies: Adds natural sweetness and vibrant colour

Garden Benefits

  • Wildlife value: Flowers attract beneficial pollinators
  • Screening: Can be trained to provide natural privacy screening
  • Ornamental appeal: Attractive white flowers in spring followed by colourful fruit
  • Extended harvest: Weeks of fresh fruit from a single plant

Companion Planting

Works well near other soft fruits like raspberries and gooseberries. Plant with herbs like mint (contained) or chives which may help deter pests. Avoid planting too close to trees or large shrubs that might compete for nutrients and water.

What You'll Receive

Your Blackberry 'Adrienne' arrives as a healthy plant, either bare-root (November-March) or in a pot (year-round availability). Plants are typically 30-60cm tall on arrival and will establish quickly with proper planting and care.

Growing Tips for Success

The key to success with 'Adrienne' lies in providing adequate support from the beginning and establishing a regular pruning routine. The thornless nature makes this variety particularly suitable for beginners or family gardens. Train canes horizontally along support wires to maximise fruiting potential and make harvesting easier. With proper care, your 'Adrienne' blackberry will provide many years of abundant, delicious fruit that far surpasses anything available in shops, both in flavour and freshness.

Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries

Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.

Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.

Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
