'Oregon' produces berries renowned for their sophisticated flavour profile that develops remarkable complexity as they ripen. The initial tartness gives way to deep, wine-like sweetness with subtle undertones that make these berries exceptional for both fresh eating and culinary applications. The flavour intensity increases significantly with full ripeness, rewarding patient harvesting with berries of gourmet quality.
Exceptional Disease Resistance
This variety exhibits outstanding natural resistance to the full range of blackberry diseases, including cane blight, orange rust, and anthracnose. The robust health characteristics ensure reliable cropping year after year with minimal intervention, making 'Oregon' an excellent choice for organic growing and sustainable fruit production. The strong disease resistance also extends the productive lifespan of plantings.
'Oregon' delivers consistent, heavy crops of 4-6kg per mature plant annually, with excellent regularity that makes harvest planning straightforward. The vigorous yet manageable growth produces strong fruiting canes that support heavy berry loads without breaking. Once established, this variety provides dependable productivity that justifies its permanent place in the garden.
This variety performs best in full sun locations receiving at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, though it tolerates light shade better than many blackberry types. Choose a sheltered position with good air circulation to maximise the natural disease resistance. The vigorous growth requires adequate space and strong support structures to accommodate its full potential.
Soil Requirements
'Oregon' thrives in rich, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0-7.0, showing good tolerance for varying soil conditions once established. Heavy soils benefit from organic matter additions to improve drainage, whilst lighter soils require compost or well-rotted manure to enhance moisture retention and fertility. Deep, fertile soil supports the vigorous growth and heavy cropping potential.
Plant during the dormant season between October and March, spacing plants 150-180cm apart to accommodate the vigorous growth. Install robust support systems with posts and horizontal wires at 90cm, 120cm, 150cm, and 180cm heights. The vigorous nature requires strong framework to support the heavy fruit loads and extensive cane growth.
Train the thornless canes along support wires as they develop, taking advantage of the spine-free growth for easy handling. Follow biennial pruning principles by removing canes immediately after fruiting and training strong new growth as replacements. The thornless nature makes all training tasks quick, safe, and pleasant throughout the growing season.
Young plants establish vigorously, typically producing a light crop in the first year after planting. Full production capacity develops by the third year when the root system and cane framework reach maturity. The robust growth habit means establishment is generally straightforward provided adequate support and nutrition are available.
Berries ripen during an intensive period in August and September, requiring regular picking every 2-3 days during peak season. Allow berries to reach full ripeness for maximum flavour development - they should be deep black and come away easily from the plant. The complex flavour rewards patience, with fully ripe berries offering exceptional eating quality.
Apply balanced fertiliser in early spring to support the vigorous growth and heavy cropping, followed by organic mulching to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular watering during dry periods ensures optimal berry development. The thornless canes make all maintenance tasks safe and efficient throughout the growing season.

Plant alongside robust herbs like rosemary, sage, and lavender which complement the vigorous growth and attract beneficial insects. The thornless nature allows integration with paths and seating areas, though ensure adequate space for the mature spread. Avoid competition from other vigorous plants that might restrict air circulation.

Success with 'Oregon' requires providing robust support systems and taking full advantage of the thornless convenience for regular maintenance and training. Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries
Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
