Chokeberry 'Little Helpers' - Compact Superfruit Shrub
Aronia Lowberry 'Little Helpers' is a revolutionary compact variety that brings the superfruit benefits of chokeberries to even the smallest gardens. This ground-breaking variety is the first and only naturally compact Aronia plant available, making it perfect for container growing, small spaces, and mixed fruit plantings. Despite its diminutive size, this remarkable shrub delivers exceptional harvests of antioxidant-rich berries alongside beautiful seasonal interest from spring flowers through autumn colour. It's an ideal choice for health-conscious gardeners seeking nutritious homegrown fruit without the space requirements of traditional fruit trees.
This deciduous fruit shrub produces deep green leaves accompanied throughout summer by clusters of beautiful white and pale pink flushed flowers, before fruits begin to ripen in autumn. The compact, naturally rounded habit eliminates the need for regular pruning whilst still delivering impressive yields. The bushes are covered from bottom to top with white clouds of flowers starting from the 2nd year of growth onwards at flowering time in mid-May, creating a spectacular spring display before transitioning to heavy crops of nutritious berries.
Soil Requirements: Extremely adaptable, thriving in most soil types from clay to sandy loam. Tolerates both acidic and alkaline conditions. Particularly good drainage tolerance, coping with both wet and dry conditions.
Light Preferences: Performs well in full sun to partial shade. Best fruit production occurs with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Moisture Needs: Once established, shows excellent drought tolerance. Benefits from consistent moisture during fruit development for best yields.
Climate Tolerance: Exceptionally hardy throughout the UK, withstanding harsh winters and exposed conditions with ease.
Best Planting Time: Autumn (October-November) or early spring (March-April)
Spacing: 80cm-1m apart for hedging, 1-1.5m for specimen planting
Planting Depth: Plant at the same level as the container surface
Soil Preparation: Work compost into planting area to improve soil structure, though plants are very adaptable
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry spells. Mature plants are drought-tolerant but benefit from consistent moisture during fruiting.
Feeding: Apply balanced fertiliser in early spring. Compost mulch provides adequate nutrition for most situations.
Pruning: Minimal pruning required due to naturally compact habit. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter.
Mulching: Apply organic mulch around base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, particularly beneficial during establishment.
Container Growing: Perfectly suited for cultivation in troughs and containers, thriving very well on terraces and balconies
Small Gardens: Ideal for compact spaces where traditional fruit trees won't fit
Mixed Fruit Plantings: Excellent in mixed berry plantings with other Lowberry varieties
Ornamental Borders: Attractive enough for mixed shrub borders with seasonal interest
Edible Landscaping: Perfect for front gardens where ornamental value matters alongside fruit production
Wildlife Gardens: Provides food for birds and nectar for pollinators
Spring: Fresh green foliage emergence followed by masses of fragrant white flowers
Summer: Attractive foliage backdrop whilst berries develop and ripen
Autumn: Spectacular foliage colour ranging from orange to deep red, alongside ripe berries
Winter: Attractive bare branch structure, berries persist if not harvested
The fruits are sweeter than usual and are a concentration of vitamins and antioxidants. Despite their compact habit, the shrubs produce a bountiful harvest of purple-black superfuits. The berries are excellent for:
Fresh eating (though quite tart)
Juices and smoothies
Jams and jellies
Baking and desserts
Freezing for year-round use
Health supplements
Aronia berries are renowned as superfruits, packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and beneficial compounds. They contain some of the highest levels of antioxidants found in any fruit, making them valuable for health-conscious gardeners.
Bird Damage: Cover ripening fruit with netting if birds become problematic, though many gardeners share the harvest.
Slow Initial Growth: Normal for young plants. Growth accelerates significantly in the second and third years.
Underproduction: Usually caused by insufficient sunlight. Ensure at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
Container Care: Ensure sufficiently large drainage holes to prevent waterlogging when growing in containers.
Chokeberries are self-fertile, meaning a single plant will produce fruit without requiring a pollination partner. However, cross-pollination with other Aronia varieties can increase yield and fruit size.
The spring flowers provide valuable nectar for bees and other pollinators. The berries feed various bird species including thrushes, blackbirds, and game birds. The dense foliage provides shelter and potential nesting sites.
Use containers at least 40-45cm diameter and depth
Ensure excellent drainage with holes in the base
Use quality multipurpose compost mixed with grit
Water regularly but avoid waterlogging
Feed monthly during growing season
Protect containers from hard frost
Berries ripen from August through October, turning deep purple-black when ready. Harvest in stages as berries ripen unevenly. Fresh berries keep for 2-3 weeks refrigerated and freeze excellently for long-term storage.
Works well with other compact berry bushes like blueberries, gooseberries, and currants. Pairs attractively with ornamental shrubs that enjoy similar conditions such as spiraea, weigela, and potentilla.
This innovative variety revolutionises homegrown superfruit production, offering exceptional nutritional benefits alongside ornamental value in the smallest of spaces. Perfect for modern gardening where space is precious but healthy, homegrown food remains a priority.
Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries
Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
