Blackberry 'Navaho' combines the safety and convenience of thornless canes with a naturally compact, upright growth habit that makes it perfect for smaller spaces. The sturdy, spine-free canes require minimal support compared to traditional varieties, making cultivation and maintenance remarkably straightforward. This compact nature allows successful growing in containers, raised beds, or confined garden spaces where larger varieties would be impractical.
'Navaho' produces medium-sized berries renowned for their exceptional sweetness and firm, meaty texture. The berries develop intense, concentrated flavour with higher sugar content than many other varieties, making them outstanding for fresh eating. The firm texture provides excellent keeping qualities, with berries maintaining their shape and sweetness for several days after harvest.
This variety exhibits excellent natural resistance to common blackberry diseases, including orange rust and anthracnose, reducing the need for chemical treatments and ensuring reliable cropping. The robust health characteristics make 'Navaho' an excellent choice for organic growing and low-maintenance fruit production, delivering consistent yields with minimal intervention.
Despite its compact size, 'Navaho' produces impressive yields of 2-4kg per mature plant annually. The concentrated fruiting period in July to August provides abundant harvests when berries are at peak quality. The upright growth habit concentrates fruit production, making harvesting efficient and ensuring excellent air circulation around developing berries.
'Navaho' thrives in full sun locations receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, though it tolerates light shade better than many varieties. The compact growth makes it suitable for smaller gardens, courtyard spaces, and even large containers on patios or terraces. Good air circulation helps maintain the variety's natural disease resistance.
This adaptable variety performs well in most well-draining soils with a pH between 6.0-7.0. For container growing, use high-quality multipurpose compost mixed with well-rotted manure. In garden beds, improve soil with organic matter to enhance fertility and moisture retention. Avoid waterlogged conditions which can compromise the root system and reduce productivity.
Plant between October and March, spacing plants 90-120cm apart in garden beds. The compact, upright habit requires minimal support - often just a single stake or small trellis system. For container growing, use pots at least 40cm diameter with good drainage. The reduced support requirements make 'Navaho' much easier to establish than vigorous spreading varieties.
The naturally upright growth habit simplifies training and maintenance considerably. Simply tie main canes to light support structures and remove any weak or damaged growth. Follow the standard biennial pruning cycle, removing fruited canes after harvest and selecting the strongest new canes for the following year's crop.
'Navaho' establishes quickly due to its compact nature, often producing a modest crop in the first year after planting. Full production begins in the second year when the root system is fully developed. The controlled growth makes establishment straightforward without concerns about vigorous spreading or aggressive root systems.
Berries ripen during a concentrated period in July to August, requiring regular picking every 2-3 days during peak season. Harvest when berries are fully black and come away easily from the plant. The firm texture means berries can be stored for several days in refrigeration whilst maintaining excellent quality and sweetness.
'Navaho's' compact habit makes it outstanding for container cultivation, allowing apartment dwellers and those with limited garden space to enjoy home-grown blackberries. Use containers at least 40cm wide and deep, with excellent drainage. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering and feeding but offer the flexibility of positioning for optimal growing conditions.
Apply balanced fertiliser in early spring, followed by organic mulch around the base. Water regularly during dry periods, particularly for container-grown plants. The compact nature makes all maintenance tasks quick and easy, whilst the disease resistance reduces the need for preventive treatments.

Smoothies: Intense sweetness reduces need for additional sweeteners
The compact growth habit makes 'Navaho' perfect for modern small gardens, urban plots, and intensive growing systems. Multiple plants can be grown in the space required for one traditional variety, potentially increasing overall harvest whilst maintaining easy management and thornless safety.
The combination of thornless safety, compact size, and exceptionally sweet berries makes 'Navaho' ideal for families with children. The manageable size allows children to help with maintenance and harvesting safely, whilst the sweet flavour encourages healthy eating habits.
Plant alongside compact herbs like thyme, oregano, and lavender which complement the smaller scale and attract beneficial insects. The controlled growth allows closer integration with other garden plants without concerns about aggressive spreading or thorny hazards.
Your Blackberry 'Navaho' arrives as a healthy, compact plant selected for the distinctive upright growth habit and superior fruit quality characteristics that make this variety exceptional for smaller spaces and easier management.
Success with 'Navaho' lies in taking advantage of its compact, manageable nature whilst providing adequate nutrition to support its concentrated fruiting habit. The key is consistent care rather than intensive management - regular watering, annual feeding, and simple pruning will maintain excellent productivity. For container growing, ensure adequate pot size and drainage whilst maintaining consistent moisture during the growing season. Your 'Navaho' blackberry will prove to be one of the most rewarding and manageable fruit plants available, delivering exceptional sweetness and convenience in a perfectly sized package for modern gardens.
Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries
Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
