Unique Aromatic Flavour Profile

Unlike traditional gooseberries, Hinnonmaki Yellow offers a distinctive and delicious aromatic flavour with a delightful hint of apricot, creating an exceptional taste experience that sets it apart from other varieties. This valuable Finnish variety bears good crops of large, yellowish-green, sweet, and aromatic berries with a hint of apricot, making it perfect for fresh eating and gourmet dessert applications.

Outstanding Disease Resistance

The bush is somewhat mildew resistant and extremely winter hardy, demonstrating excellent resistance to powdery mildew and white pine blister rust. This natural disease resistance ensures consistent harvests without frequent chemical treatments, making it perfect for organic growing methods and low-maintenance fruit gardening.

Heavy Cropping Potential

By the second season each bush can produce up to 3kg of fruit, with mature Hinnonmaki yellow producing 5-6lbs of fruit per plant. This reliable heavy cropper produces abundant harvests of large, golden berries, ensuring plentiful supplies for fresh eating, preserves, and culinary adventures.

Superior Dessert Quality

A dessert variety gooseberry producing heavy crops of very large yellow fruit with an excellent flavour, these golden berries are perfect for eating fresh straight from the bush. The sweet, aromatic flesh with apricot undertones makes them ideal for gourmet applications, fruit salads, and premium dessert preparations.

Self-Fertile Convenience

This variety is self-pollinating and doesn't require pollinating varieties, making it perfect for smaller gardens or single-plant growing situations. The white spring blossoms provide early season beauty whilst attracting beneficial pollinators before developing into the abundant fruit harvest.

Attractive Seasonal Interest

Its outstanding fall foliage colour is another reason to invite Hinnonmaki Yellow into your gardens, with grape leaf-shaped foliage that transforms from green in summer to attractive autumn colours. This ornamental appeal makes it equally valuable as a decorative shrub in mixed borders or dedicated fruit garden settings.

Compact Growing Habit

The bush is low growing with a spreading habit, reaching 3-4 feet in height and spread, making it perfect for smaller gardens, container growing, or training against walls. The compact size doesn't compromise productivity, delivering excellent yields in minimal space.

Versatile Growing Requirements

Prefers well-drained soil and can be planted in half day to full day of sun, adapting to various garden conditions whilst maintaining excellent performance. Prefers a cool climate and rich, moist, well-drained soil high in organic matter, thriving in silt and clay loams as well as fertile sandy loams.

Ideal Growing Position

Plant in a sunny to partially shaded position with protection from strong winds and hot afternoon sun. Prefers cool climate conditions with rich, moist, well-drained soil high in organic matter, avoiding light sandy soils that become hot and dry or areas where water stands during winter.

Container Growing Excellence

Perfect for container cultivation on patios, terraces, or in small gardens where space is limited. The compact growth habit and self-fertile nature make it ideal for pot growing, allowing precise soil control and easy harvesting access whilst maintaining excellent fruit production.

Simple Maintenance Requirements

May require extra fertiliser to maintain vigorous growth, but otherwise has minimal care requirements once established. Annual pruning in late winter maintains shape and encourages productive growth, whilst the disease-resistant nature reduces ongoing treatment demands.

Quick Establishment Benefits

Bears fruit within 1-2 years of planting, providing quick returns on your garden investment. The rapid establishment and early fruiting make it perfect for gardeners wanting immediate results from their fruit growing efforts.

Multiple Culinary Applications

Perfect for fresh eating, jams, jellies, desserts, and gourmet culinary applications. The unique aromatic flavour with apricot undertones makes these berries exceptional for traditional preserves, modern patisserie, and sophisticated fruit-based dishes that showcase their distinctive taste profile.

Seasonal Interest Calendar

  • Spring: White blossoms appear in early spring, providing nectar for beneficial insects

  • Early Summer: Young golden berries develop and foliage reaches full maturity

Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries

Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.

Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.

Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
