Discover the exceptional flavour and impressive berry size of Blueberry 'Darrow', the premium northern highbush variety that has captivated gardeners with its extraordinary fruit quality since its development. This remarkable cultivar produces fruit as big as a quarter, delivering delectable, sweet-tart flavour in huge, dark-blue berries that ripen in the heart of summer. Earning high marks as a favourite due to its deep blueberry flavour that's not overly sweet and not tart, 'Darrow' combines outstanding berry quality with reliable performance, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking superior homegrown blueberries with exceptional taste and impressive visual appeal.
Blueberry 'Darrow' stands apart from other varieties with its exceptionally large berry size and superior flavour profile. The berries deliver a deep blueberry flavour that strikes the perfect balance - not overly sweet and not tart, creating an ideal taste that appeals to all palates. The fairly large berries make harvesting both efficient and rewarding, whilst their impressive size creates stunning visual impact in both the garden and kitchen applications.
'Darrow' demonstrates excellent reliability as a garden performer, with mature bushes producing increasingly more berries as they establish. The variety begins bearing fruit within 1-2 years after planting, providing relatively quick returns on investment. The vigorous growth habit ensures strong establishment and consistent annual crops, making it a dependable choice for gardeners seeking long-term fruit production.
Reaching 4-5 feet in height and spread at maturity, 'Darrow' maintains a manageable size that fits comfortably in most garden spaces. Growing to be four to six feet tall, this compact habit makes it ideal for smaller gardens, mixed borders, and container growing, whilst still delivering substantial harvests from a relatively modest footprint.
Plant 'Darrow' in a position receiving half day to full sun for optimal fruit development and flavour concentration. Whilst the variety tolerates partial shade, maximum sun exposure produces the largest berries and most intense flavour. Choose a location with good air circulation and protection from strong winds that might damage fruit-laden branches.
Blueberries like well-drained, acidic soil, and 'Darrow' thrives in conditions with a pH between 4.5-5.5. The variety benefits from generous organic matter incorporation to improve both drainage and moisture retention. Consistent soil moisture throughout the growing season supports optimal berry development and size.
'Darrow' is partially self-fertile, but planting two varieties provides greater fruit production. Cross-pollination with other northern highbush varieties significantly increases yields and can improve berry size. This flexibility makes it suitable for both single-plant gardens and larger fruit growing areas.
Maintain 'Darrow' bushes through annual dormant season pruning, removing old wood over four years old to encourage vigorous new growth. The naturally upright growth habit requires minimal shaping, with pruning focused on maintaining air circulation and removing weak or damaged wood. Regular pruning encourages the production of strong fruiting wood that supports the large berry crop.
Prepare planting areas with generous organic matter incorporation, creating raised beds or mounded planting areas to ensure excellent drainage. Plant at the same depth as grown in the nursery, spacing bushes 4-6 feet apart to accommodate mature spread. Mulch around plants to maintain soil moisture and suppress weeds whilst providing ongoing organic matter.
Apply acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth and fruit production. Maintain consistent soil moisture throughout the growing season, particularly during berry development to ensure optimal size and quality. Regular organic mulching maintains soil fertility, moisture levels, and provides ongoing soil improvement.
'Darrow's' manageable mature size makes it excellent for container cultivation, allowing gardeners with limited space to enjoy premium homegrown blueberries. Use large containers with excellent drainage and acidic potting medium. Container-grown plants require more frequent watering and feeding but reward proper care with impressive harvests of quarter-sized berries.
Plant alongside other blueberry varieties to maximise cross-pollination and extend harvest seasons. The compact growth integrates well with other acid-loving plants including rhododendrons, azaleas, and heathers. Beneficial companion plants include pine needles for natural soil acidification and shallow-rooted herbs that won't compete with the blueberry's root system.
The combination of exceptional berry quality, reliable productivity, and outstanding cold hardiness makes 'Darrow' an excellent long-term investment for serious fruit gardeners. The variety's proven performance and premium fruit quality ensure consistent harvests of restaurant-quality berries that provide exceptional value and eating pleasure over its productive lifespan.
Success with 'Darrow' centres on providing the acidic, well-drained soil and adequate sunlight that supports its exceptional berry quality. Take advantage of the variety's cold hardiness and heat tolerance to extend the growing range, whilst utilising cross-pollination to maximise yields. The impressive berry size and superior flavour balance make 'Darrow' an outstanding choice for gardeners seeking premium blueberries that combine exceptional taste with reliable garden performance, delivering consistently impressive harvests of quarter-sized berries that represent the pinnacle of homegrown blueberry quality.
Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries
Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
