Appearance and Characteristics

Flowers

The star feature of 'Lisarose' is its distinctive flowering display that spans the winter months. 'Lisa Rose' produces carmine buds which are followed by pink tinged white flowers throughout the Winter and into Spring. Bearing clusters of fragrant, creamy white flowers that open from deep red buds, the contrast between the dramatic pink buds and delicate white flowers creates an exceptionally beautiful display. The dark pink buds protrude above the foliage, and the beautiful pink colour is only clearly visible following a very cold period, making winter cold snaps a welcome sight for gardeners growing this remarkable shrub.

Foliage

Bushy evergreen shrub with ovate glossy dark green leaves that provide year-round structure and backdrop for the winter flowers. Evergreen, dark and glossy foliage creates an attractive framework that enhances the pink bud display whilst maintaining garden interest throughout the year.

Berries

The nectar rich blooms are followed by glossy black fruits, extending the ornamental season well beyond the flowering period. Followed by blue/black berries, these fruits provide valuable wildlife food whilst adding another decorative element to the plant's impressive repertoire.

Growth Habit

A compact, evergreen, winter-hardy shrub that maintains an attractive rounded habit without becoming overly vigorous. The naturally dense branching creates excellent structure whilst remaining manageable for most garden situations.

Soil Requirements

Grow Viburnum tinus plants in any moderately fertile, well drained soil. Best grown in evenly moist, well-draining soil. Prefers deep, rich loams but clay soils are tolerated if drainage is adequate. The plant adapts well to various soil types provided drainage is adequate, making it suitable for most garden situations.

Light Requirements

Grow Viburnum tinus plants in a sunny or semi shaded position, with all soils, full sun, part shade & full shade tolerance. Tough and tolerant of shade, this versatile shrub adapts to various light conditions whilst flowering most prolifically in good light.

Watering Needs

Tolerant of occasional drought once established, though consistent moisture during extended dry periods maintains optimal flowering performance and foliage quality. Evergreen Viburnums should be sheltered from cold, drying winds.

Planting

Plant out pot grown plants in growing position either in the spring or autumn. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. When planting, incorporate some well-rotted compost or manure in the planting hole and a scoop of mycorrhizal fungi. Space plants 2-3 metres apart for individual specimens.

Maintenance

It is a low-maintenance shrub that requires minimal attention once established. Robust plant, easy to grow, making it perfect for busy gardeners. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and encourages fresh growth for the following year's display.

Feeding

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. A mulch of well-rotted compost around the base helps retain moisture and provides gradual nutrient release.

Specimen Planting

It works equally well in the shrub border where its distinctive pink buds and extended flowering period create focal points during the winter months. The dramatic colour contrast makes it perfect for positioning where it can be appreciated from indoor viewpoints.

Hedging

It is suitable for creating a hedge. It can also be used to make an informal flowering hedge that provides year-round structure with spectacular winter interest. Used to create a dense, evergreen hedge that pollinating insects will love.

Container Growing

It works equally well in large pot, making it suitable for patios, terraces, or areas where ground planting isn't possible. Blooming both in the ground and in pots is easy.

Woodland Edge Planting

Can be grown in borders or woodland edges, where its shade tolerance and winter flowering create valuable seasonal interest in transitional garden areas.

Companion Planting

'Lisarose' pairs beautifully with other winter-flowering plants and early spring bulbs. The pink buds complement winter-flowering heathers, early camellias, and Christmas roses. Snowdrops, crocuses, and early narcissi planted nearby create layered seasonal interest that extends the winter display. For year-round structure, combine with other evergreens like holly, mahonia, or skimmia that share similar growing requirements and flowering seasons.

Wildlife Value

The nectar rich blooms provide valuable food for early-season pollinators when few other flowers are available. A dense, evergreen hedge that pollinating insects will love. The berries provide food for birds whilst the dense evergreen structure offers shelter and potential nesting sites.

Cut Flowers

The blooms also make excellent cut flowers, bringing the winter garden indoors where the fragrance and unique pink bud display can be appreciated at close quarters.

Pollution Tolerance

Like other viburnums, 'Lisarose' demonstrates good tolerance to urban pollution, making it suitable for city gardens, roadside plantings, or challenging urban environments.

Cold Enhancement

The beautiful pink colour is only clearly visible, following a very cold period, meaning the most dramatic displays occur after winter cold snaps intensify the bud colouration.

Pruning Timing

Avoid heavy pruning during the flowering season to maintain the spectacular winter display. Light trimming is best undertaken immediately after flowering to avoid removing the following year's flower buds.

Sheltered Position

Evergreen Viburnums should be sheltered from cold, drying winds, though the plant is generally hardy and tolerant of typical British conditions.

Why Choose 'Lisarose'?

This exceptional cultivar transforms the traditional Laurustinus into something truly special, offering the same reliable evergreen structure and winter flowering with dramatically enhanced ornamental value. The distinctive pink buds create a unique garden feature that's both sophisticated and eye-catching, providing months of interest when colour is most precious. This useful shrub provides valuable winter interest at a time when colour is seldom found in the garden.

Whether used as a specimen plant, informal hedge, or container feature, Viburnum tinus 'Lisarose' delivers exceptional value through its extended flowering season, distinctive colouration, and reliable evergreen performance. For gardeners seeking a plant that combines beauty with practicality whilst providing essential winter interest, 'Lisarose' represents the perfect blend of innovation and reliability that makes every garden more rewarding.

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.

Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email sales@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

* Please Note: Shrubs in 20 litre pots and above might require a pallet delivery starting at £79.99 per pallet. Depending on the exact pot size and height it may be possible to get approximately 5 plants per pallet at no extra cost. The maximum height we can dispatch on a pallet is 2.0m, this includes the height of the pallet and pot.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

Planting and Conditions

Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.

Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.

Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.

Aftercare and Pruning

Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.

Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.

Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.

All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.

Potential Issues

Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.

This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.

To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
