Amelanchier Lamarckii

Common Names: Juneberry, Serviceberry, Snowy Mespilus

Overview

Amelanchier lamarckii is one of Britain's most beloved small ornamental trees, offering exceptional four-season interest in a compact, garden-friendly size. This deciduous beauty transforms throughout the year, beginning with clouds of pristine white spring blossoms, followed by sweet edible berries, stunning autumn colour, and attractive winter bark. Native to North America but perfectly at home in British gardens, this hardy tree has earned its place as a favourite among gardeners seeking year-round appeal with minimal maintenance requirements.

Key Features

Spring Flowers:

Spectacular displays of pure white, star-shaped flowers appear in profuse clusters before the leaves fully emerge, creating a cloud-like effect that rivals ornamental cherries. The blooms are honey-scented and attract early pollinators.

Edible Fruit:

Small, dark purple berries ripen in early summer, resembling tiny blueberries. These sweet, juicy fruits are beloved by birds and can be eaten fresh or used in jams and baking.

Autumn Colour:

Outstanding autumn display with leaves turning brilliant shades of orange, red, and yellow, often with multiple colours appearing simultaneously on the same tree.

Size:

Typically reaches 4-6 metres in height with a similar spread, forming an attractive, naturally rounded crown that requires little pruning.

Bark:

Smooth, grey bark becomes increasingly attractive with age, providing winter interest.

Growing Conditions

Hardiness:

Fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS zone H7), tolerating temperatures well below -15°C without protection.

Soil Requirements:

Highly adaptable to most soil types, though performs best in moist, well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Tolerates clay, loam, and sandy soils with good drainage. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Sun Requirements:

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Best flowering and autumn colour develop in sunny positions, though it performs admirably in dappled shade.

Water Needs:

Drought-tolerant once established, though benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods, particularly when young.

Planting and Care

When to Plant:

Plant from autumn through to early spring, avoiding periods of hard frost. Container-grown plants can be planted year-round if watered adequately.

Spacing:

Allow 4-5 metres between trees or large shrubs to accommodate mature spread and good air circulation.

Soil Preparation:

Dig a generous planting hole and incorporate organic matter such as well-rotted compost or leaf mould. Ensure good drainage in heavy soils by adding grit or planting slightly raised.

Ongoing Care:

Extremely low-maintenance once established. Pruning is rarely necessary due to its naturally attractive shape. If required, light pruning should be done immediately after flowering to preserve next year's blooms.

Feeding:

Generally unnecessary in garden soils, though a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring can benefit trees growing in poor conditions.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:

The highlight of the year begins with emerging bronze-tinted young leaves followed by masses of white flowers that can last 2-3 weeks, creating a spectacular display.

Early Summer:

Small green berries develop and gradually ripen to dark purple, providing food for wildlife and opportunity for harvesting.

Autumn:

Arguably the most stunning season with leaves turning brilliant orange-red colours that can persist for several weeks, making it one of the finest trees for autumn colour.

Winter:

Attractive bare branch structure and smooth bark provide quiet beauty, whilst developing flower buds promise next spring's display.

Garden Uses

Specimen Tree:

Perfect as a focal point in lawns or prominent garden positions where its seasonal changes can be fully appreciated throughout the year.

Woodland Gardens:

Naturalistic choice for informal plantings, thriving in the dappled shade of larger trees whilst providing understorey interest.

Mixed Borders:

Excellent backbone plant for shrub borders, providing height, structure, and seasonal variety.

Wildlife Gardens:

Outstanding wildlife value, supporting pollinators in spring and providing berries for birds in summer.

Small Gardens:

Ideal scale for smaller plots where larger trees would be overwhelming.

Wildlife Value

Exceptional wildlife benefits make this tree a gardener's ally in supporting biodiversity. Spring flowers provide nectar for bees and early butterflies when few other sources are available. The berries are eagerly consumed by blackbirds, thrushes, finches, and other garden birds. The tree also supports various moth caterpillars and other insects throughout the growing season.

Companion Planting

Pairs beautifully with spring bulbs such as daffodils and bluebells planted beneath its canopy. Rhododendrons and azaleas make excellent companions, sharing similar soil preferences. Underplant with woodland perennials like Brunnera, Pulmonaria, or Epimedium for extended seasonal interest. The tree's light canopy allows sufficient light for many understory plants.

Culinary Uses

The sweet, almond-flavoured berries are delicious eaten fresh and can be used in pies, jams, and preserves. They're rich in vitamins and antioxidants, making them a healthy garden crop. Harvest when fully ripe and dark purple, though you'll be competing with the birds who know a good thing when they see it!

Potential Considerations

Generally pest and disease-free, though occasionally susceptible to fireblight in very wet conditions. Young trees may benefit from protection against rabbits and deer browsing. The berries can create minor staining on hard surfaces, though most gardeners consider this a small price to pay for the tree's many benefits.

Why Choose Amelanchier Lamarckii?

This remarkable tree offers unparalleled value for money, providing four distinct seasons of beauty in a single, manageable plant. Its combination of spectacular spring flowers, edible summer fruit, outstanding autumn colour, and attractive winter structure makes it one of the finest small trees for British gardens. The added benefits of supporting wildlife and requiring minimal care make it an ideal choice for both novice and experienced gardeners seeking maximum impact with minimal effort.

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.

Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email sales@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

* Please Note: Shrubs in 20 litre pots and above might require a pallet delivery starting at £79.99 per pallet. Depending on the exact pot size and height it may be possible to get approximately 5 plants per pallet at no extra cost. The maximum height we can dispatch on a pallet is 2.0m, this includes the height of the pallet and pot.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

Planting and Conditions

Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.

Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.

Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.

Aftercare and Pruning

Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.

Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.

Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.

All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.

Potential Issues

Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.

This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.

To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
