Growing Success Tips

Success with Rhubarb Victoria centres on selecting a fertile, well-drained position with good sun exposure and rich soil preparation, ensuring adequate spacing of 120-150cm between plants for optimal crown development and maximum stem production. Plant during spring or autumn, preparing the soil with generous well-rotted manure incorporation to support the vigorous growth habit and large stem development that defines this legendary variety. Establish consistent watering during the growing season whilst ensuring excellent drainage to prevent crown rot and maintain optimal growing conditions. Take advantage of the copious harvests by picking regularly from April through June, enjoying the authentic apple-gooseberry flavour that has made Victoria the foundation of rhubarb cuisine for nearly two centuries. Allow first-year plants to establish without harvesting, then enjoy abundant harvests from the second year onwards, taking advantage of the heavy-producing nature and exceptional stem quality. Maintain historical authenticity by saving seed when possible and dividing established plants every 4-5 years to preserve this irreplaceable heritage variety. Your Victoria will demonstrate that royal heritage excellence delivers exceptional garden performance, combining historical significance with proven reliability that transforms ordinary vegetable gardens into living museums of culinary history for gardeners who appreciate both tradition and proven quality in their edible landscapes.

Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries

Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.

Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.

Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
