Evergreen Candytuft 'Appen-Etz' - Perennial Candytuft
Iberis 'Appen-Etz' is a delightful evergreen perennial that brings reliable spring charm to British gardens with minimal fuss. This compact, spreading candytuft forms neat mounds of glossy dark green foliage that become completely smothered in masses of fragrant white flowers from late spring through early summer. Perfect for the everyday gardener, this hardy plant combines exceptional drought tolerance with consistent performance year after year, making it an ideal choice for edging, rockeries, and sunny borders where dependable colour is needed.
This charming evergreen perennial forms dense, spreading mounds of narrow, dark green leaves that remain attractive throughout the year. The plant grows to 30cm tall with oblong to lance-shaped dark green leaves, bearing dense clusters of white flowers in flat heads up to 7cm across. During its flowering period, the entire plant becomes a carpet of pure white, creating one of the most reliable and striking displays in the spring garden. The flowers are fragrant and borne in dense, rounded, corymb-like clusters, making them excellent for cutting as well as garden display.
Soil Requirements: Thrives in poor to moderately fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. Excellent drainage is essential - waterlogged conditions can cause root rot. Tolerates chalky and sandy soils particularly well.
Light Preferences: Requires full sun for best flowering performance. Will tolerate very light shade but flower production may be reduced.
Moisture Needs: Plants become drought tolerant once established, making them perfect for water-wise gardens. Requires regular watering only during establishment.
Best Planting Time: Spring (March-May) or early autumn (September-October)
Spacing: Plant 25-30cm apart for ground cover effect, 30-40cm for individual specimens
Planting Depth: Plant at the same level as the container soil surface
Soil Preparation: Improve heavy clay soils with coarse grit or gravel to enhance drainage. Add lime to acidic soils if needed.
Watering: Water regularly during first growing season to establish roots. Mature plants rarely need supplementary watering except in severe drought.
Pruning: Trim lightly after flowering to maintain compact habit. Cut back by one-third immediately after flowering to encourage fresh growth and maintain shape.
Edging: Excellent for edging sunny paths or borders, creating neat, defined lines
Rockeries: Makes a great companion for rockeries and alpine gardens
Wall Planting: Perfect for spilling over stone walls and raised beds
Ground Cover: Effective weed-suppressing ground cover for sunny slopes and banks
Container Planting: Excellent for sunny planters and Mediterranean-style pots
Cut Flowers: Fragrant flowers make lovely additions to spring posies and arrangements
Poor Flowering: Usually caused by insufficient light or overly rich soil. Ensure full sun position and avoid heavy feeding.
Leggy Growth: Results from shade or age. Trim back after flowering and consider dividing older clumps.
Root Rot: Caused by poor drainage. Ensure excellent drainage at planting and avoid overwatering.
Slug Damage: Young growth occasionally attacked by slugs. Use organic slug pellets or encourage natural predators.
Division: Divide established clumps every 3-4 years in spring or early autumn to maintain vigour.
Cuttings: Take semi-ripe cuttings in summer for easy propagation.
Seed: Species will come true from seed, but 'Appen-Etz' is best propagated vegetatively to maintain characteristics.
The abundant spring flowers provide valuable early nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators when many other plants are still dormant. The dense, evergreen growth offers shelter for beneficial insects and small wildlife throughout the year.
Pairs beautifully with other Mediterranean plants such as lavender, rosemary, and thyme. Complements spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils, and works well with other rockery plants including aubrieta, alyssum, and sedums. The white flowers provide excellent contrast to purple-flowered plants.
This reliable, low-maintenance perennial rewards minimal effort with maximum spring impact, making it an essential plant for any gardener seeking consistent, long-term performance with outstanding seasonal display.
Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.
As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

From late autumn onwards and dependant on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.
Alpines are a group of perennials that generally grow in rocky conditions at high altitudes.
As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.
It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.
By using this simple guide and a little time, alpines can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
