  • Mature Height: 1.2m
  • Spread: 1.2m
  • Flowering Period: April (white blossoms)
  • Harvest Time: June to July

  • Productive Lifespan: 15+ years with proper care
  • Hardiness: Hardy in the UK down to temperatures of -20 to -15 degrees Celcius (RHS hardiness rating H6)

Superior Disease Resistance

Hinnonmaki Red demonstrates excellent resistance to powdery mildew, the most common disease affecting gooseberries, ensuring consistent harvests without the need for frequent chemical treatments. This natural disease resistance makes it perfect for organic growing methods and low-maintenance fruit gardening.

Outstanding Harvest Potential

Expect yields of 4-5 pounds per mature bush, with bearing beginning just 1-2 years after planting. This reliable heavy cropper produces delicious red berries which are bursting with flavour, ensuring abundant harvests for fresh eating, preserves, and culinary adventures.

Delicious Dual-Flavour Experience

The tart skin covers sweet flesh, allowing you to enjoy both flavours in each berry. The ruby-red, medium-sized gooseberries are sweet when ripe with a tangy outer skin, creating a complex flavour profile perfect for eating fresh or processing into jams, jellies, and desserts.

Self-Fertile Convenience

This variety is self-pollinating and doesn't need pollinating varieties, making it perfect for smaller gardens or single-plant growing. The white spring blossoms provide early season beauty before developing into the abundant fruit harvest.

Attractive Ornamental Appeal

Features grape leaf-shaped foliage that's green in summer and turns red in autumn, providing year-round garden interest beyond fruit production. The attractive seasonal colour changes make it equally valuable as an ornamental shrub in mixed borders or fruit garden settings.

Versatile Growing Requirements

Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers slightly acidic, fertile, moist but free-draining soil. Very easy to grow and thrives in many different types of soil, avoiding waterlogged areas, making it adaptable to various garden conditions and soil types.

Compact Garden-Friendly Size

Reaches a mature height of 3-4 feet with a spread of 3-4 feet, making it perfect for smaller gardens, container growing, or training against walls. The compact size doesn't compromise productivity, delivering excellent yields in minimal space.

Multiple Culinary Applications

Perfect for pies, jellies, bottling, and preserves, these versatile berries excel in both fresh consumption and processing. The balanced sweet-tart flavour makes them ideal for traditional British puddings, continental preserves, and modern culinary creations.

Ideal Growing Position

Plant in a sunny to partially shaded position with protection from strong winds. Happiest planted in a sunny spot, either training against a wall or in containers to take up less space in small gardens. Avoid waterlogged areas whilst ensuring consistent moisture during the growing season.

Container Growing Excellence

Perfect for container cultivation on patios, terraces, or in small gardens. The compact growth habit and self-fertile nature make it ideal for pot growing, allowing precise soil control and easy harvesting access.

Simple Maintenance Requirements

Minimal care requirements once established. Annual pruning in late winter maintains shape and encourages productive growth. Bears fruit stably with minimal maintenance and is able to withstand drought once established, reducing ongoing care demands.

Quick Establishment Benefits

Bears fruit within 1-2 years of planting, providing quick returns on your garden investment. The rapid establishment and early fruiting make it perfect for gardeners wanting immediate results from their fruit growing efforts.

Seasonal Interest Calendar

  • Spring: Attractive white blossoms appear in April, providing early nectar for beneficial insects

  • Early Summer: Young berries develop and foliage reaches full green maturity

  • Mid-Summer: Ruby-red berries ripen for harvest in July-August

  • Autumn: Foliage transforms to attractive red colours before winter dormancy

  • Winter: Dormant period with attractive bare branch structure

Landscape Design Applications

  • Fruit Gardens: Essential component of productive kitchen gardens and allotments

  • Mixed Borders: Combines ornamental appeal with practical fruit production

  • Container Displays: Perfect for patio fruit growing and small space gardening

  • Wall Training: Excellent for training against sunny walls and fences

  • Wildlife Gardens: Spring blossoms support early pollinators

Growing Success Tips

Success with 'Hinnonmaki Red' centres on providing consistent moisture during establishment whilst taking advantage of its natural hardiness and disease resistance. Choose a sunny, well-drained position, mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds, and prepare to enjoy abundant harvests of delicious ruby-red berries. Your Ribes uva-crispa 'Hinnonmaki Red' will prove that exceptional fruit quality and reliable performance can be combined in one outstanding variety, delivering bountiful harvests and garden beauty that transforms any outdoor space into a productive and rewarding growing environment.

Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries

Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.

Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.

Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
