The user-friendly design encourages regular picking and maintenance without protective equipment.
The dessert quality red fruit is tear-drop shaped with a sweet, mild taste, whilst berries start off as pale green but as they mature they turn to a deep burgundy red colour. Large berries ripen in late July as they turn from pink to dark reddish purple, providing delicious affinity for honey and cream and exceptional versatility for fresh eating and culinary applications.
'Captivator' is bred specifically for cold hardiness and disease resistance, with good resistance to powdery mildew. Mildew and rust-resistant, with few insect pests, this variety requires minimal intervention whilst delivering reliable results season after season.
Capturing the best traits of both European and American gooseberries, 'Captivator' combines European fruit quality with American hardiness and disease resistance. This hybrid produces large, tasty fruits whilst being winter hardy and disease-resistant.
Captivator gooseberries typically reach a mature height of 3 to 4 feet, with a similar spread, making them suitable for various garden settings. These plants exhibit a moderate growth rate, averaging 1 to 2 feet per year, ensuring manageable size for most garden situations.
This popular self-fertile gooseberry requires no additional varieties for fruit production, making it perfect for single-plant growing situations or small gardens where space is limited.
Can be cultivated as ornamental plants due to their green floral blooms in the spring, providing dual-purpose value as both productive fruit bush and attractive landscape feature throughout the growing season.
This variety thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Plant in locations with adequate air circulation to maximise the natural disease resistance and ensure optimal fruit development.
Plant between December and March, allowing 1.2-1.5 metres spacing for optimal air circulation. For outdoor planting, ensure your location has adequate sunlight and good drainage to support healthy growth. Prepare planting holes with organic matter for best establishment.
Excellent for container gardening, choose pots that are at least 5 gallons to provide enough root space. The compact size and thornless nature make 'Captivator' ideal for patio growing where traditional thorny varieties would be impractical.
When pinkish they are excellent for cooking and when fully ripe they can be eaten from the bush. Pick when ripe to avoid fruit drop, ensuring maximum harvest yield and fruit quality.
Prune in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins, focusing on removing dead or crossing branches to improve airflow. Apply organic mulch around the base to maintain soil moisture and suppress weeds. The disease-resistant nature requires minimal spraying or intervention.
Highly nutritious, especially rich in vitamin A and phosphorus, providing exceptional health benefits alongside delicious flavour. Fresh berries from your own garden ensure maximum nutritional value and flavour intensity.
The combination of thornless canes, disease resistance, self-fertility, and reliable productivity makes 'Captivator' ideal for family gardens. Children can safely harvest berries without risk of thorns, whilst parents appreciate the low-maintenance nature and consistent yields.
Released to growers in 1949 and still popular today, 'Captivator' has proven its exceptional garden value through decades of successful cultivation. The combination of ease of care, reliable productivity, and long lifespan makes it an outstanding investment for any fruit garden.

Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries
Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
