The standout feature of 'Flashing Lights' is its incredible profusion of brilliant scarlet-red flowers with delicately fringed petals that create a spectacular carpet of colour. Each bloom displays vivid salmon-scarlet colouring with beautifully serrated edges, and many flowers feature distinctive dark red rings or eyes that intensify the dramatic effect. The small but numerous single flowers emit a subtle sweet fragrance and are borne on sturdy stems that rise just above the foliage mat. The dainty blossoms attract bees and butterflies whilst being completely ignored by deer, making this an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
The plant forms loose mats of dark green leaves that create excellent year-round garden structure. The narrow, linear evergreen foliage forms low-growing carpets that provide the perfect backdrop for the vivid red blooms whilst maintaining garden interest throughout winter months. The foliage turns attractive bronze tones in autumn, adding seasonal interest beyond the main flowering period.
'Flashing Lights' is particularly noted for its vigorous mat-forming habit, creating spreading carpets of evergreen foliage that cascade beautifully over edges and between rocks. This ground-hugging growth makes it ideal as small-scale groundcover, at garden edges, or for cascading over stones. The creeping habit allows it to colonise difficult areas whilst remaining perfectly controlled.
For optimal growth, plant in well-draining soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Prefers a sweet (alkaline) soil and performs best in lightly alkaline, fertile, light, fast-draining soil. Excellent drainage is essential, particularly during winter months when waterlogged conditions can cause root rot. Heavy clay soils must be amended with horticultural grit and organic matter.
Best grown in full sun but tolerates partial shade reasonably well. Provide at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain the compact form and prolific flowering that makes this variety so spectacular. Full sun positions produce the most abundant scarlet blooms whilst maintaining the tight, mat-forming growth habit.
Once established, demonstrates good drought tolerance and requires minimal additional watering. These plants perform well in lean, well-drained conditions and actually flower more prolifically when not over-watered. Excessive watering, particularly during winter months, can cause more problems than drought stress.
Plant from spring through early autumn, with spring planting providing optimal establishment time before the first winter. Space plants 25-30cm apart for effective groundcover or use as individual specimens for accent planting. Being fully hardy, it performs excellently in container cultivation and can be successfully grown in alpine troughs and hanging baskets.
Shear back lightly after flowering to encourage continuous bloom and repeat flowering. This also prevents the plant from becoming straggly and maintains the tight, carpet-like appearance. Divide established clumps every 3-4 years in spring to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.
Maiden pinks perform best in lean, nutrient-poor soils and require minimal supplemental feeding to produce abundant flowers. Over-fertilising leads to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering and can reduce the intensity of the vivid red colouring. An annual light application of lime helps maintain the alkaline soil conditions they prefer.
Perfect for massing as groundcover where its spreading habit and intense colour create spectacular seasonal displays. Ideal for covering difficult slopes, banks, and areas where traditional lawn grass struggles to establish.
Excellent for growing in rockeries where its low-growing habit and drought tolerance make it perfect for planting between stones and in crevices. The cascading growth habit softens hard landscaping whilst providing brilliant colour contrasts.
Delights along borders where its mat-forming habit creates dramatic colour ribbons along pathway edges and border fronts. The low growth won't obstruct views of taller plants whilst providing months of vivid colour.
Excellent for growing in containers where its cascading habit and long flowering season make it perfect for pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets. The controlled drainage of container growing suits its requirements whilst allowing the dramatic colour to be appreciated at close range.
Perfect for cascading over retaining walls and raised beds where its trailing habit creates spectacular waterfalls of scarlet colour. The plant thrives in the sharp drainage provided by wall crevices and elevated positions.
'Flashing Lights' creates stunning colour contrasts with silver-leaved plants like lamb's ear and artemisia, and pairs beautifully with white and cream flowers for classic colour combinations. Combines effectively with other Dianthus varieties in pink and white tones for extended seasonal interest, or with ornamental grasses for contemporary prairie-style plantings.
Spring: Fresh evergreen growth emerges with the first brilliant red blooms appearing in late spring
Summer: Peak flowering period with masses of scarlet blooms creating spectacular carpet displays
Autumn: Foliage develops attractive bronze tones adding seasonal colour beyond flowering
Winter: Evergreen mat-forming foliage provides garden structure and groundcover throughout winter
RHS Hardiness: H6 (Hardy throughout most of the UK)
Temperature Tolerance: Suited for temperate climates, fully hardy in most UK conditions
Regional Notes: Performs exceptionally well in chalky, limestone regions and coastal areas
Challenging Conditions: Ideal for dry, alkaline soils, exposed sunny positions, and challenging slope conditions
Dianthus deltoides 'Flashing Lights' represents outstanding value for gardeners seeking dramatic, low-maintenance groundcover with spectacular colour impact. Its vivid scarlet-red flowers and vigorous mat-forming habit set it apart from traditional garden pinks, whilst the deer resistance and drought tolerance make it perfect for challenging garden situations. The combination of brilliant extended flowering, excellent groundcover properties, minimal maintenance requirements, and wildlife appeal makes this an exceptional choice for rock gardeners, container enthusiasts, and anyone seeking high-impact colour for difficult-to-plant areas.
Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.
As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.
Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.
Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email

From late autumn onwards and dependant on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.
Alpines are a group of perennials that generally grow in rocky conditions at high altitudes.
As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.
It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.
By using this simple guide and a little time, alpines can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
