Discover the perfect blackcurrant for smaller gardens with Blackcurrant 'Ben Sarek', the compact Scottish-bred variety that proves great things come in small packages. This remarkable dwarf cultivar delivers exceptional productivity from a neat, manageable bush that reaches just 1-1.2 metres tall, making it ideal for limited spaces, containers, and modern garden designs. Part of the renowned 'Ben' series developed in Scotland, this variety combines outstanding cold tolerance with heavy cropping capabilities, offering gardeners the perfect solution for maximising blackcurrant harvests in minimal space.
Blackcurrant 'Ben Sarek' revolutionises blackcurrant growing for space-conscious gardeners by delivering exceptional productivity from an impressively compact framework. At 1.5m high it's a good choice for small gardens. This unique growth habit makes it perfect for high-density planting and modern garden designs where space efficiency is paramount.
Despite its compact stature, 'Ben Sarek' delivers remarkable productivity that rivals much larger varieties. Ben Sarek is a very high yielding variety, with the bush consistently so loaded with large, flavorful shiny fruit that branches may need support. In trials, this variety yielded up to 30% more than standard varieties, demonstrating its exceptional productivity per square metre.
'Ben Sarek' produces impressively large berries that make harvesting both efficient and rewarding. The berries are large, with an excellent flavour, whilst being very large black fruits of good quality that are well flavored. The substantial berry size significantly reduces picking time whilst providing impressive visual impact.
This variety offers the advantage of early fruiting, extending the blackcurrant season and providing fresh fruit when it's most appreciated. Fruiting around mid July makes 'Ben Sarek' one of the earliest reliable croppers, whilst fruits approximately 7-10 days earlier than standard mid-season varieties. The early harvest timing avoids peak summer heat stress.
'Ben Sarek' demonstrates exceptional resilience to challenging weather conditions, making it reliable even in exposed or colder locations. It has very good resistance to frost and cold damage, whilst being high tolerance for frost and cold injury. This outstanding hardiness ensures consistent crops even after harsh winters.
The variety offers excellent natural resistance to common blackcurrant diseases, reducing maintenance requirements and supporting organic growing approaches. The mildew-resistant and midge-resistant bush requires minimal intervention, whilst Ben Sarek has frost and mildew resistance so a good choice for colder sites.
'Ben Sarek's' compact nature makes it exceptionally well-suited to container cultivation, bringing blackcurrant growing to patios, balconies, and small urban spaces. An ideal fruit to grow in a container or small garden, the variety thrives in large pots whilst maintaining its productive capacity and manageable size.
The variety's growth habit and fruiting pattern make harvesting particularly efficient and convenient. The large fruit is easily picked from short strigs, whilst the fruits ripen simultaneously, allowing you to pick the entire bunch. This simultaneous ripening enables efficient harvesting but requires prompt picking as the fruit tends to drop when ripe.
Plant 'Ben Sarek' in full sun locations where it receives 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal fruit development and flavour. Needs full sun for best performance, though the variety tolerates partial shade. The compact growth makes it suitable for prominent positions where the heavy fruit display can be fully appreciated.
'Ben Sarek' thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0-7.0. The compact root system benefits from rich, organic soil preparation that supports the intensive fruit production whilst ensuring good drainage.
Plant between October and March, spacing bushes 90-150cm apart to accommodate the compact mature size whilst ensuring adequate air circulation. Plant lower than the nursery soil-mark to encourage new growth from below soil level. The heavy cropping nature means branches may require temporary support during peak fruiting.
'Ben Sarek' is self-fertile, producing excellent crops as a single plant without requiring pollination partners. However, yields can be enhanced by planting alongside other blackcurrant varieties to encourage cross-pollination. This self-fertility makes it perfect for container growing and small garden situations.
Young plants establish quickly and begin productive cropping within the first year after planting. The bush is easily maintained at 3' tall with 2-3' spacing, making ongoing care straightforward. The variety's natural vigour ensures rapid establishment whilst the compact habit keeps maintenance simple.
Harvest in mid-July when berries develop full colour and flavour intensity. The simultaneous ripening characteristic enables efficient bulk harvesting, though prompt picking prevents fruit drop. The large berry size makes containers fill quickly, whilst the excellent flavour provides immediate rewards for growing efforts.
The exceptional productivity may require temporary support during peak fruiting periods. This small, compact bush is so productive its branches are commonly borne down under the weight of the crop. Simple bamboo canes or framework supports can prevent branch breakage during heavy cropping years.
'Ben Sarek' provides valuable ecological benefits whilst producing crops for the garden. Awarded RHS Plants for Pollinators status for its value to wildlife, the variety supports beneficial insects during flowering whilst providing habitat and food sources throughout the growing season.
Apply balanced fertiliser in early spring to support the intensive fruit production, followed by organic mulching to maintain soil fertility and moisture levels. The compact size makes all maintenance tasks straightforward, whilst the disease resistance minimises intervention requirements throughout the growing season.
'Ben Sarek' addresses the challenge of growing productive fruit in limited spaces without compromising on quality or yield. The combination of compact growth, heavy cropping, and excellent fruit quality makes it the ideal solution for modern gardens where space efficiency is essential.
The variety's compact nature and productivity make it exceptionally suited to container cultivation. Use pots at least 40cm wide and deep with excellent drainage. Container growing allows gardeners to optimise position for sun exposure whilst making harvesting convenient and accessible.
The compact size works well with other dwarf fruit varieties and herbs in intensive planting schemes. Plant alongside compact gooseberries, herbs like thyme and oregano, and low-growing perennials that complement the early summer fruiting period.
The combination of space efficiency, exceptional productivity, and premium fruit quality makes 'Ben Sarek' an outstanding investment for modern gardeners. The variety's proven performance and compact habit ensure maximum returns from minimal space over many productive years.
Success with 'Ben Sarek' centres on taking advantage of its compact nature whilst supporting its exceptional productivity. Provide the full sun position and fertile soil that maximises fruit size and flavour, whilst being prepared to support branches during heavy cropping years. The early fruiting requires prompt harvesting to prevent fruit drop, but rewards growers with the season's first homegrown blackcurrants. Your 'Ben Sarek' blackcurrant will establish itself as the perfect small-garden solution, delivering impressive harvests of large, flavourful berries from a beautifully compact and manageable framework that proves exceptional productivity can come in small packages.
Buying Fruit Trees/Bushes from Jacksons Nurseries
Our trees might be Freshly Potted and the root system may not be fully established, and loose soil may occur when unpacking.
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
