Berberis Orange Ice is a spectacular compact deciduous shrub renowned for its eye-catching variegated foliage that displays vibrant orange, cream, and green tones throughout the growing season. This hardy barberry cultivar offers exceptional ornamental value with its unique colouration and neat, manageable growth habit, making it a standout choice for contemporary garden design.
Stunning Variegated Foliage: Orange, cream, and green leaves create a striking multicoloured display
Compact Form: Reaches approximately 0.8-1 metre in height and spread
Seasonal Colour Changes: Foliage intensifies in colour through autumn
Thorny Protection: Natural deterrent against deer and rabbits
Low Maintenance: Drought tolerant and disease resistant once established
Light Requirements
Berberis Orange Ice performs best in full sun to light partial shade. The most vibrant orange and cream variegation develops with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Insufficient light may cause the foliage to revert to predominantly green colouring.
Soil Preferences
Soil Type: Thrives in well-draining soils including clay, loam, and sandy conditions
pH Range: Adaptable to slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0-7.0)
Drainage: Excellent drainage essential - waterlogged conditions will cause root problems
Fertility: Performs well in average garden soils; overly rich soils may reduce variegation
Climate Tolerance
Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK (RHS Hardiness H6)
Temperature Range: Withstands temperatures down to -20°C
Wind Exposure: Tolerates moderate wind once established; shelter beneficial in exposed sites
Optimal Planting Times
Plant container-grown specimens from March through October, avoiding extreme weather conditions. Spring planting allows maximum establishment time before winter.
Spacing Requirements
Space plants 1-1.5 metres apart for informal hedging, or allow full spread room for specimen planting. Consider mature size when positioning near pathways due to thorny nature.
Planting Instructions
Excavate a hole twice the root ball width and equal depth
Incorporate organic matter into heavy clay soils for improved drainage
Position plant at the same depth as in the container
Backfill with amended native soil, firming gently
Water thoroughly and apply 5cm organic mulch, keeping clear of the stem
Watering Requirements
Provide regular watering during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once mature, Berberis Orange Ice is drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Feeding Programme
Apply a balanced granular fertiliser in early spring. A light annual top-dressing of compost provides adequate nutrition for most garden situations. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which may promote excessive green growth at the expense of variegation.
Pruning Guidelines
Timing: Prune immediately after flowering in late spring/early summer
Technique: Light pruning to maintain shape and remove any dead, damaged, or wayward branches
Variegation Management: Remove any purely green shoots promptly to maintain colourful foliage
Safety Equipment: Always wear thick gardening gloves and long sleeves due to sharp thorns
Health Management
Berberis Orange Ice demonstrates excellent natural resistance to pests and diseases. Ensure good air circulation around plants and avoid overhead watering to prevent any potential fungal issues.
Design Uses
Specimen Feature: Creates a stunning focal point in mixed borders
Colour Contrast: Provides bright accent against darker foliaged plants
Low Hedging: Forms an attractive informal hedge or border edging
Container Cultivation: Suitable for large containers in courtyard gardens
Companion Planting
The orange and cream variegation pairs beautifully with:
Deep purple foliage plants (Heuchera 'Palace Purple', Cotinus)
Blue-flowered perennials (Ceanothus, Perovskia)
Silver-grey foliaged plants (Artemisia, Lavender)
Dark green evergreen shrubs for year-round structure
Spring
Fresh variegated leaves emerge with bright orange and cream markings. Small yellow flowers appear in late spring, attracting early pollinators.
Summer
Maintains excellent foliage colour throughout warm months, with orange tones often intensifying in sunny positions.
Autumn
Develops enhanced orange and red tints before leaf drop, creating spectacular autumn interest that extends the season of colour.
Winter
Bare thorny stems provide architectural structure and create interesting shadow patterns in winter sunlight.
Beneficial Insects
Spring flowers provide valuable nectar sources for bees and other pollinating insects during the early season when few other plants are flowering.
Bird Habitat
Dense, spiny growth offers secure nesting opportunities for small birds, while the thorny protection deters predators.
Ecosystem Benefits
Supports biodiversity by providing shelter and food sources for various beneficial garden creatures.
Safety Aspects
Sharp Thorns: Requires careful placement away from high-traffic areas and children's play spaces
Protective Gear: Always wear appropriate protection when handling or pruning
Maintenance Requirements
Variegation Stability: May occasionally produce green-only shoots that require removal
Sun Dependency: Requires adequate light to maintain best colouration
Growth Characteristics
Mature Dimensions: Typically reaches 80cm-1m in both height and spread
Growth Rate: Moderate growth, achieving mature size in 3-4 years
Garden Styles
Berberis Orange Ice complements various garden styles:
Contemporary Gardens: Adds structural colour interest
Cottage Gardens: Provides bright accents among traditional plantings
Mediterranean Schemes: Pairs well with drought-tolerant plantings
Urban Gardens: Thrives in city conditions with good drainage
Colour Schemes
Works particularly well in:
Hot Colour Palettes: Enhances orange, red, and yellow themes
Contrast Schemes: Creates drama against purple and blue plantings
Autumn Themes: Extends seasonal colour throughout the garden

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.
Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.
