Armeria maritima ‘Rose’ (Sea Thrift / Sea Pink)

Overview
Armeria maritima ‘Rose’, commonly known as Sea Thrift or Sea Pink, is a hardy, evergreen perennial that thrives in sunny, well-drained conditions. Loved for its neat clumps of grassy foliage and bright rose-pink flower heads, it adds a pop of colour to borders, gravel gardens, rockeries, and coastal plots. Its compact form and tolerance of tough conditions make it ideal for everyday gardeners looking for reliable, long-lasting plants that are easy to care for.

Flowers and Foliage
Armeria maritima ‘Rose’ produces globe-shaped clusters of vivid rose-pink flowers that rise on wiry stems above its tidy, grass-like foliage. The flowers appear from mid-spring through summer, especially with regular deadheading. The evergreen leaves form dense tufts that remain attractive year-round, providing ground-hugging interest even when the plant is not in flower.

  • Flowering season: April to July, with repeat blooms possible
  • Flower colour: Bright rose-pink
  • Leaf type: Narrow, evergreen, deep green leaves
  • Leaf habit: Compact, mound-forming

Size and Spread
Mature height: 15 to 25 cm (including flower stems)
Mature spread: 20 to 30 cm
Growth rate: Slow to moderate
Habit: Clump-forming, low and tidy

Where to Plant
This plant prefers full sun and is particularly well suited to poor, sandy, or rocky soils. It thrives in areas with excellent drainage and is a classic choice for coastal gardens due to its salt and wind tolerance. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils.

  • Best location: Full sun
  • Ideal soil: Light, sandy, or gravelly soils with good drainage
  • Soil pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline
  • Uses: Rockeries, borders, coastal gardens, containers, edging paths, green roofs

How to Plant
Plant in spring or early autumn to give roots time to establish before flowering or winter. For best results, prepare the planting hole with added grit if your soil is heavy. Space plants around 20 to 30 cm apart to allow airflow and spreading.

  1. Dig a hole the same depth as the rootball and slightly wider

  2. If your soil is heavy, mix in some grit or horticultural sand to improve drainage

  3. Place the plant in the hole with the crown level to the soil surface

  4. Backfill, gently firm in, and water well after planting

Care and Maintenance
Once established, Armeria maritima ‘Rose’ is extremely low maintenance. It prefers dry conditions and requires very little watering except during prolonged dry spells in its first year. Overly fertile soil may result in floppy growth and fewer flowers, so avoid overfeeding. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering, and lightly trim back foliage in autumn to maintain a tidy shape.

  • Watering: Only during dry spells when newly planted
  • Feeding: Not required
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage repeat blooms
  • Pruning: Light trim in autumn to tidy foliage
  • Dividing: Every 2 to 3 years in spring to maintain vigour
  • Pests/diseases: Rarely troubled; avoid overwatering to prevent rot

Seasonal Interest

  • Spring: First flush of vivid pink flowers
  • Summer: Continued flowering with deadheading; evergreen foliage remains fresh
  • Autumn: Foliage stays green, forming neat mounds
  • Winter: Low-growing evergreen foliage provides year-round structure

Wildlife and Ecological Value
Armeria maritima ‘Rose’ is a pollinator-friendly plant, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. It’s a great choice for wildlife gardens or those aiming to increase biodiversity in smaller spaces. Its dense foliage also provides shelter for ground-dwelling insects.

Good to Know

  • Exceptionally drought tolerant once established

  • One of the best performers in coastal or windy gardens

  • Can be used as edging along paths, steps, or paving

  • Will tolerate poorer soils where fussier plants struggle

  • Evergreen all year round, adding winter interest

Everyday Gardener’s Tip
“If you’ve got a dry, sunny spot where little else will grow, Sea Thrift is the perfect choice. It’s reliable, neat, and looks lovely nestled in gravel or rockeries. Pair it with other low-growing, sun-loving plants for a cheerful, low-care display.”

Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.

As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email orders@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

From late autumn onwards and dependant on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.

Alpines are a group of perennials that  generally grow in rocky conditions at high altitudes.

As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.

It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.

By using this simple guide and a little time, alpines can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
