Viburnum tinus 'Spirit'

A compact evergreen shrub with stunning winter flowers and year-round structure

Viburnum tinus 'Spirit' is an exceptional evergreen shrub that brings life and colour to the garden during the darkest months of the year. This compact cultivar of the popular Laurustinus offers all the classic benefits of its parent species whilst maintaining a more manageable size perfect for modern gardens. With clusters of pink buds which open to lightly scented white flowers from November to May, followed by blue-black fruits, 'Spirit' provides months of interest when most other plants are dormant. This compact variety is especially appreciated for its hardiness and ability to thrive in a wide range of soils and light conditions, from full sun to partial shade.

Flowers

The real magic of 'Spirit' lies in its extraordinary flowering season. Prominent pink buds throughout the winter are followed by white flowers in late winter, creating a spectacular display when colour is most needed in the garden. The delicate white flowers emerge from attractive pink buds, creating a lovely two-tone effect that brightens the winter landscape. The lightly scented flowers provide a subtle fragrance that can be appreciated on still winter days, making them perfect for planting near paths or seating areas.

Foliage

Featuring glossy dark green leaves that remain attractive throughout the year, 'Spirit' provides consistent evergreen structure. The glossy oval leaves create a dense, attractive backdrop for the winter flowers and maintain their rich colour even in the coldest weather. The compact growth habit ensures the foliage remains neat and well-proportioned without becoming overly vigorous.

Berries

Following the extended flowering period, deep blue berries appear for fall and winter, extending the seasonal interest well into the following year. These black berries provide valuable food for birds whilst adding another decorative element to the plant's already impressive repertoire.

Growth Habit

'Spirit' maintains a naturally compact, rounded habit that's ideal for smaller gardens or areas where space is limited. The dense branching creates excellent structure whilst remaining manageable, making it perfect for gardeners who want maximum impact with minimal maintenance.

Soil Requirements

This hardy variety thrives in a wide range of soils, adapting well to most garden conditions. It performs best in well-draining soil but tolerates both slightly acidic and alkaline conditions. Heavy clay soils benefit from the addition of organic matter to improve drainage, whilst sandy soils may require additional moisture retention.

Light Requirements

It can do well in part to full sun, making it extremely versatile for various garden positions. Viburnum are tolerant of partial shade, though flowering may be more prolific in sunnier positions. This adaptability makes 'Spirit' suitable for a wide range of garden situations.

Watering Needs

Once established, 'Spirit' demonstrates good drought tolerance, though consistent moisture during extended dry periods maintains the best flowering performance and foliage quality. The plant's robust nature means it copes well with typical British weather patterns without requiring special attention.

Planting

Plant from spring through early autumn in a position where the winter flowers can be appreciated. Growing several in the same area will encourage a good display of berries, making group plantings particularly rewarding. Space plants 1.5-2 metres apart for individual specimens or 1 metre apart for hedge planting.

Maintenance

Once established, viburnum plants are fairly low-maintenance, making 'Spirit' an excellent choice for busy gardeners. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and encourages fresh growth. Remove any dead or damaged wood as needed, and trim lightly to maintain the desired size and shape.

Feeding

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. A mulch of well-rotted compost around the base helps retain moisture and provides gradual nutrient release throughout the growing season.

Hedging

'Spirit' is a popular choice for hedging, providing year-round structure with the bonus of winter flowers. Viburnum can be used as an informal hedge, creating attractive boundaries that offer privacy whilst contributing seasonal interest and wildlife value.

Specimen Planting

Makes a great specimen shrub towards the back of a border, bringing interest and colour when there's little else around. The compact size and winter flowering make it perfect for creating focal points in winter gardens or mixed borders.

Foundation Planting

The reliable evergreen nature and manageable size make 'Spirit' excellent for foundation plantings around buildings, where its year-round structure and winter flowers provide consistent interest and softening of hard architectural lines.

Winter Garden Features

An undemanding evergreen shrub bringing interest and colour when there's little else around, 'Spirit' is invaluable for creating winter garden schemes that maintain appeal throughout the coldest months.

Companion Planting

'Spirit' pairs beautifully with other winter-flowering plants and early spring bulbs. Combine with winter-flowering heathers, Christmas roses, or early camellias for extended winter colour. Snowdrops, crocuses, and early daffodils planted nearby create layered seasonal interest. For year-round structure, pair with other evergreens like holly, mahonia, or skimmia that share similar growing requirements.

Wildlife Value

The highly fragrant spring blooms are full of nectar and pollen, attracting early-season pollinators like native bees, moths, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The berries provide valuable winter food for birds, whilst the dense evergreen structure offers shelter and potential nesting sites.

Pollution Tolerance

Like other viburnums, 'Spirit' demonstrates good tolerance to urban pollution, making it suitable for city gardens, roadside plantings, or areas with challenging air quality conditions.

Longevity

With proper care, 'Spirit' provides decades of reliable performance, making it an excellent long-term investment for garden structure and winter interest.

Pruning Timing

Avoid heavy pruning during the flowering season to maintain the winter display. Light trimming is best undertaken immediately after flowering to avoid removing the following year's flower buds.

Berry Production

Growing several in the same area will encourage a good display of berries, as cross-pollination between plants improves fruit set significantly.

Space Planning

While compact, 'Spirit' still requires adequate space to develop its natural rounded habit. Consider mature size when planning nearby plantings to avoid overcrowding.

Why Choose 'Spirit'?

This exceptional cultivar addresses one of gardening's greatest challenges - maintaining interest and colour during the winter months. Bringing year-round interest and winter colour to the garden, 'Spirit' offers the perfect combination of reliability, beauty, and seasonal value. An undemanding evergreen shrub that thrives in typical British conditions, it provides the kind of dependable performance that makes gardening both easier and more rewarding.

Whether used for hedging, specimen planting, or as part of a winter garden scheme, Viburnum tinus 'Spirit' delivers outstanding value through its extended flowering season, attractive evergreen foliage, and beneficial wildlife contributions. For gardeners seeking a plant that truly earns its place by providing beauty when it's most needed, 'Spirit' represents an investment in year-round garden appeal.

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.

Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email sales@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

* Please Note: Shrubs in 20 litre pots and above might require a pallet delivery starting at £79.99 per pallet. Depending on the exact pot size and height it may be possible to get approximately 5 plants per pallet at no extra cost. The maximum height we can dispatch on a pallet is 2.0m, this includes the height of the pallet and pot.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

Planting and Conditions

Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.

Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.

Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.

Aftercare and Pruning

Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.

Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.

Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.

All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.

Potential Issues

Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.

This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.

To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
