Overview

Rose 'Chicago Peace' stands as one of the most spectacular hybrid tea roses available to modern gardeners, representing a stunning natural sport of the world-famous 'Peace' rose. This exceptional variety produces enormous fully double blooms that can reach up to 15cm across, displaying a breathtaking colour combination of copper-pink petals with a luminous canary yellow base, enhanced by warm orange tones that create an unforgettable garden spectacle. The large blooms feature 45-60 petals and showcase a striking blend of phlox-pink and creamy yellow with orange tones, delivering the classic high-centred form that makes hybrid tea roses so prized for exhibition and cutting. With its vigorous upright growth habit reaching impressive heights and excellent repeat flowering performance, 'Chicago Peace' combines dramatic visual impact with reliable garden performance, making it an outstanding choice for formal rose gardens, mixed borders, and anywhere spectacular individual blooms are desired.

Key Features

The outstanding appeal of 'Chicago Peace' lies in its spectacular very large blooms that showcase the perfect hybrid tea form with exceptional colour complexity and substance. Each flower displays fully double, cupped form with 45-60 petals and can reach six inches across, creating individual blooms of remarkable presence and garden impact. The unique colour pattern begins with a golden-yellow base that transitions through warm orange tones to copper-pink edges, with the intensity varying according to weather conditions and seasonal changes. The lovely pink tinges start on the outside of the rose and can eventually cover the entire head, creating an ever-changing display throughout the flowering season. The substantial petal count ensures excellent weather resistance whilst maintaining the classic high-centred form, and the light fruity fragrance adds aromatic appeal to complement the visual magnificence.

Growth Characteristics

This hybrid tea rose displays vigorous upright growth, reaching 4-7 feet tall with a spread of 3-4 feet, creating an impressive garden presence that commands attention throughout the growing season. The plant possesses big quilted glossy apple-green leaves and handsome bushy plant structure, providing an excellent framework for the spectacular blooms. The flowers are borne on strong upright stems throughout the growing season, making this variety particularly valuable for cutting and exhibition purposes where stem strength and flower presentation are crucial. The vigorous nature means plants can easily reach 5+ feet tall within just two years, establishing quickly to provide impressive garden impact.

Flowering Performance

From spring to fall, 'Chicago Peace' delivers exceptional flowering displays that bloom in flushes, ensuring continuous garden interest throughout the extended growing season. Producing huge, pink blooms with a copper tinge all season long, flowering from early summer until the fall, this rose provides reliable repeat performance that maintains garden colour for months on end. The individual blooms develop slowly, allowing gardeners to appreciate the colour evolution from bud to full flower, whilst the substantial size ensures each bloom creates significant visual impact. The flush-flowering habit typical of hybrid tea roses means periods of spectacular display are followed by rest periods before the next flowering cycle, creating waves of dramatic colour throughout the season.

Growing Conditions

'Chicago Peace' thrives in full sun with rich, fertile, well-drained soils that provide adequate moisture, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering performance and colour development. The rose should be placed in full sun positions with consistently moist, well-drained soil, benefiting from incorporation of well-rotted organic matter and regular feeding to support the vigorous growth and large flower production. The substantial size and vigorous nature mean this rose requires adequate space and good air circulation to prevent disease issues. Best colour development occurs east of the Rockies, though the variety adapts well to various climatic conditions providing basic requirements are met.

Hardiness and Disease Resistance

The variety shows good disease resistance, though some susceptibility to blackspot may occur, requiring attention to preventive care and good garden hygiene practices. Special care should be given to disease prevention, particularly from fungi like black spot and rust, making this rose most suitable for gardeners who can provide regular monitoring and maintenance. The robust constitution typical of hybrid tea roses means that with proper care, this variety will provide years of reliable performance.

Care and Maintenance

'Chicago Peace' requires regular maintenance typical of hybrid tea roses to achieve optimal flowering performance and health. Care includes winter pruning, spring and fall fertilising, and monthly feeding with seaweed fertiliser, following standard hybrid tea rose care practices. Apply balanced rose fertiliser in early spring and again in early summer, with regular deep watering during dry periods to support the vigorous growth and large flower production. The large size means annual pruning is essential to maintain shape and encourage strong new growth, whilst regular deadheading promotes continued flowering. Disease prevention through good air circulation, appropriate spacing, and preventive treatments helps maintain the healthy foliage necessary to support the spectacular blooms.

Garden Applications

'Chicago Peace' excels in formal rose gardens and exhibition plantings where its spectacular individual blooms can be fully appreciated and displayed. The impressive size and classic hybrid tea form make it ideal for show gardens, entrance plantings, and formal borders where dramatic individual specimens are required. An excellent choice for beds and borders or containers, providing great cut flowers, this rose suits both traditional and contemporary garden settings where substantial flowering impact is desired. The strong stems and large blooms make it particularly valuable for cutting gardens and floral arrangements, whilst the vigorous growth provides excellent backdrop planting for smaller roses and perennials.

Container Growing

The substantial size and vigorous growth habit make 'Chicago Peace' suitable for large container cultivation on patios and terraces where adequate space and support can be provided. Choose containers at least 60cm wide and deep with excellent drainage, using high-quality multipurpose compost enriched with slow-release fertiliser to support the vigorous growth requirements. Container-grown specimens require more frequent watering and feeding than ground-planted roses, with particular attention to supporting the large flower heads during windy conditions. The spectacular blooms and upright habit make container cultivation worthwhile for gardeners with limited ground space who desire exhibition-quality roses.

Seasonal Interest

Throughout the growing season, 'Chicago Peace' provides spectacular seasonal interest that evolves beautifully with changing conditions. Spring brings the emergence of healthy glossy foliage and the first flower buds, building anticipation for the main flowering display. The exceptional blooms from early summer through autumn provide months of dramatic colour, with each flush creating renewed garden excitement. The substantial foliage remains attractive throughout the season, providing excellent backdrop for the spectacular flower displays, whilst the strong architectural branching structure provides winter interest when dormant.

Fragrance Profile

'Chicago Peace' features a pleasant light to moderate fruity fragrance that complements the spectacular visual display without overwhelming the garden atmosphere. The rose has a pleasant, fruity fragrance that adds aromatic appeal to the cutting garden and enhances the overall garden experience. Whilst not as intensely fragrant as some varieties, the subtle scent provides gentle aromatic interest that enhances rather than competes with the dramatic visual impact of the enormous blooms.

Companion Planting

The spectacular copper-pink and yellow colouring of 'Chicago Peace' provides excellent opportunities for companion planting with complementary garden plants and striking colour schemes. The warm tones work beautifully with purple and blue flowers such as lavender and delphiniums, creating sophisticated colour combinations that highlight both plants. White flowers provide elegant contrast whilst complementary warm colours such as orange and red create vibrant displays. The substantial size makes it suitable as a focal point surrounded by lower-growing perennials and herbs that won't compete with the dramatic blooms.

Heritage and Innovation

'Chicago Peace' represents a natural sport of the world's most famous rose, Peace, discovered in Chicago and representing the fascinating natural mutation that creates new varieties through genetic colour changes. The striking colour blend results from natural, genetic color mutation, demonstrating how nature continues to create new garden treasures from established varieties. This heritage connection to one of the most celebrated roses in history adds significant interest and value to the variety whilst providing all the benefits of modern hybrid tea performance.

Exhibition Quality

One of the most valued features of 'Chicago Peace' is its exceptional exhibition quality that makes it highly prized among rose enthusiasts and competitive growers. The classically formed rose with 5+ inch blooms on a very vigorous plant provides the substantial size and perfect form required for show success. The spectacular colour combination and excellent substance make individual blooms standout specimens that capture attention and win awards in competitive settings.

Cut Flower Excellence

The excellent cut flower qualities make 'Chicago Peace' particularly valuable for gardeners who enjoy bringing roses indoors for arrangements and display. The strong stems, large size, and spectacular colouring create outstanding floral arrangements that provide lasting indoor enjoyment, whilst the substantial nature ensures good vase life when properly conditioned.

Why Choose 'Chicago Peace'?

Rose 'Chicago Peace' represents the ultimate expression of hybrid tea excellence, combining spectacular size, dramatic colour complexity, and classic garden performance. The enormous blooms with their unique copper-pink and yellow colouring provide unmatched visual impact from early summer through autumn, whilst the vigorous growth ensures substantial garden presence and reliable performance. Whether grown for exhibition, cutting, or garden display, this outstanding hybrid tea rose offers exceptional value that will provide years of gardening pleasure and spectacular flowering displays that capture attention and admiration in any garden setting.

Help and Advice Aftercare

How our roses are supplied through the seasons

All our roses are cultivated in an open field and are carefully dug up when the weather is optimal, typically in October or November. While other nurseries supply roses bare root, once our field-grown roses have been potted up we supply them freshly potted. This better protects the roots and helps keep them moist in transit, ensuring your roses arrive as healthy as when they left our nursery. So don’t be alarmed if the compost comes away from the roots when you remove them from the pot.

Pointing at Graft of Rose after Removing from Pot

The roses can remain in their pots over the winter, as long as they are properly watered and fed, but it's best to plant them out as soon as possible. If you do plant them straight away make sure the planting mix is prepared first, hold the root close to the top of the hole as you tip the pot upside down and try to keep as much compost as possible from falling away. They will already be pruned, so no additional pruning is needed except for trimming any dead tips. Regular pruning can start in late winter, the year after planting.

Rose Types

Hybrid Tea Roses (HT)

Hybrid Tea roses are probably the most popular group of roses, available in both bush and standard form they have long flower stems and shapely blooms. Blooms are typically medium to large in size, with many petals which form a distinct central cone.

Floribunda Roses (FL)

Floribunda roses bears its flowers in clusters or trusses, with several blooms open at time in each truss. A popular choice the Floribunda rose group is unrivalled for colour, reliability and longevity as a bedding display however the flower form in generally inferior to the Hybrid Tea.

Patio Roses (PATIO)

Patio roses were introduced in the 1980’s and the group now contains several popular varieties. Generally low-growing roses that were once grouped with the Floribuna group but have now been put in their own group of compact versions. Usually growing about 50cm high they make excellent plants for patio containers or at the front of borders.

Climbing Roses (CLM)

Climbing roses as the name suggests are the perfect choice for covering a wall or screen. Often grouped together with Ramblers, Climbers tend to have stiffer stems, larger flowers but smaller trusses than Ramblers.

Rambling Roses (RAM)

Rambling roses are often grouped with Climbing Roses but the ramblers tend to have a more pliable stems that can be used to run along the soil to use as groundcover or can be used to make weeping standards.

Miniature Roses (MINI)

Miniature roses have increased in popularity in recent years due to their versatility, even grown indoors as temporary pot plants that grow to a maximum height of 40cm. An ideal choice for planting in tubs, edging beds and rockeries.

English Roses (ENG)

Often referred to as Austin or David Austin Roses, English roses are hybrids of old English roses and more modern varieties bread by David Austin to provide the best of both, mixing old rose shapes and scents with more modern colour range, compact habits and repeat flowering.

Planting Advice

Roses like a generous root space, so dig a deep hole approximately twice as wide as the current root system, preferably adding composted organic matter to the soil. Never plant into frozen soil – in winter, await a frost-free period. Carefully remove the pot and gently tease the roots apart to spread them around the hole. Position the plant so that the ‘bud point’ (the place where the shoots emerge from, where the cultivated rose was grafted onto the rootstock) is at soil level. Replace the soil, firming it down gently, then water copiously. Ideally, a general purpose fertiliser should be applied to the surrounding soil as a top dressing. We also highly recommend the use of Rose Rootgrow, which provides a friendly fungus that prevents ‘rose replant syndrome’.

Buying our Roses

Pot Size

Most of our roses are supplied in a 4 litre pot although this may vary slightly depending on rose variety. If the size of pot differes significatly from 4 litres then we will make this clear somewhere on the product page.

Seasonality

Our roses are grown outdoors and as such are subject to seasonal changes. As we sell potted stock throughout the year your rose may not arrive and look like you expect it to. If you are uncertain how your rose will arrive (especially if buying for a gift) then we suggest you contact us prior to making a purchase.

Freshly Potted

Each year a new batch of roses is potted up ready for the following season. Once potted (usually November/December time) they go on sale as 'Freshly Potted'. If you purchase a freshly potted rose and plant it soon after you will find that when removing the rose from the pot there will be a lot of loose soil as the roots will not have had time to grow and bind the compost.

Rose Raised Ready to be Planted

Pruned/Cut Back

In autumn the majority of our roses have finished flowering and begin to look untidy, at this point we prune them quite hard in preparation for the following season. We continue to sell roses throughout the year, when a rose has been pruned in such a way we will identify it has being so. If you are not sure what to expect then please ask prior to making a purchase. Some garden centres/supermarkets sell stock that has been grown abroad or in poly-tunnels so they look 'picture perfect' out of season, while this is ideal for a gift they are short lived once planted.

Aftercare

Water regularly until established. In spring, apply a specialised rose fertiliser along with manure mulch, taking care to avoid direct contact of the mulch with the stems. In winter remove all branches which are dead, diseased or damaged along with any older stems as necessary to avoid overcrowding at the centre. Cut back new growth by about a quarter and prune side-shoots to within three buds of the main stem to encourage vigour. Prompt removal of ‘dead-heads’ will encourage further flowering.
