Dianthus 'Devon Cream' (Garden Pink)

A fragrant cottage garden perennial with creamy-white fringed flowers for extended seasonal colour

Overview

Dianthus 'Devon Cream' is an exceptional hardy perennial that delivers months of fragrant cottage garden charm with its distinctive creamy-white flowers and neat evergreen foliage. This outstanding garden pink forms compact mounds of blue-grey linear leaves that become adorned with masses of beautifully fringed, clove-scented blooms from late spring through to early autumn. Its well-behaved habit, reaching 15-20cm tall and spreading to 30cm, makes it perfect for border edging, rock gardens, and containers where reliable performance and continuous colour are desired. This delightful plant offers exceptional value, providing both visual appeal and delicious fragrance that enhances any garden setting.

  • Soil Requirements: Well-draining, neutral to slightly alkaline soil

Flowers

The standout feature of 'Devon Cream' is its profusion of creamy-white flowers with exquisitely fringed, serrated petals that create a delicate, lace-like appearance. Each bloom measures 2-3cm across and displays the classic five-petalled form typical of garden pinks. The flowers emit an intense, sweet clove-like fragrance that is particularly pronounced in the evening, making them irresistible for cutting and perfect for planting near seating areas. The continuous succession of blooms throughout the growing season provides one of the longest flowering displays among hardy perennials.

Foliage

The plant forms attractive clumps of narrow, linear evergreen leaves in distinctive blue-grey tones that create excellent year-round structure. The grass-like foliage forms neat, dense mounds that serve as the perfect foil for the pale flowers whilst providing garden interest even during winter months. The evergreen nature ensures the plant maintains its architectural value throughout the year.

Growth Habit

'Devon Cream' is particularly noted for its compact, well-behaved habit, forming tight cushions of evergreen foliage that maintain their neat appearance without becoming invasive. This clump-forming growth creates excellent border definition whilst remaining perfectly controlled, ideal for formal plantings and small garden spaces.

Soil Requirements

For optimal growth, plant in well-draining soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH, which suits the Mediterranean origins of garden pinks. The key requirement is excellent drainage, particularly in winter when waterlogged conditions can prove fatal. Heavy clay soils must be improved with grit and organic matter, or consider raised bed cultivation.

Light Requirements

Best grown in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Provide at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain compact form and abundant flowering. Full sun produces the most prolific blooms and intensifies the fragrance whilst maintaining the tight, mounded growth habit.

Watering Needs

Once established, shows excellent drought tolerance and requires minimal supplementary watering. They are remarkably drought-resistant and thrive in poor, dry soils, making them ideal for challenging Mediterranean-style gardens. Overwatering, particularly in winter, causes more problems than drought stress.

Planting

Plant from spring through early autumn, with spring planting allowing optimal establishment before winter. Space plants 20-25cm apart for groundcover effect or use as individual specimens. Being fully hardy, it makes an excellent container plant for patios and can be successfully grown in window boxes and alpine troughs.

Maintenance

To maintain continuous flowering, regular deadheading is essential throughout the growing season. Cut back spent flower stems to encourage fresh blooms and prevent energy going into seed production. Divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring to maintain vigour and prevent the centre becoming woody.

Feeding

Garden pinks thrive in lean soil and require minimal supplemental fertiliser to produce abundant blooms. Excessive fertility leads to lush foliage at the expense of flowers and can reduce the intensity of fragrance. An annual light dressing of lime or wood ash helps maintain the slightly alkaline conditions they prefer.

Border Edging

The classic application for this compact variety, where it creates fragrant, continuous colour along path edges and border fronts. Perfect for formal parterre gardens and cottage garden borders where its neat habit won't encroach on pathways.

Rock Gardens

Thrives in the sharp drainage and challenging conditions typical of rock gardens and alpine displays. Excellent for tucking into crevices and small pockets where its drought tolerance and compact size make it invaluable.

Container Growing

Exceptional for pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets where its long flowering season and delightful fragrance can be appreciated at close quarters. The controlled drainage of containers suits its requirements perfectly whilst allowing the scent to be enjoyed on patios and terraces.

Cut Flowers

The fragrant blooms make delightful cut flowers for small posies, buttonholes, and cottage garden arrangements. Regular cutting actually encourages more blooms whilst providing armfuls of scented flowers for the home.

Wildlife Gardens

The flowers attract butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects throughout the extended flowering season. The seeds provide valuable food for goldfinches and other small birds, making it excellent for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Companion Planting

'Devon Cream' creates stunning combinations with purple and blue flowers such as lavender, catmint, and salvia for classic cottage garden schemes. Pairs beautifully with silver-leaved plants like Stachys byzantina and artemisia. Combines effectively with other Dianthus varieties in pink and red tones for extended colour displays, or with rosemary and thyme for fragrant Mediterranean-style plantings.

Potential Issues

Generally trouble-free and remarkably pest and disease-free when grown in suitable conditions. Occasionally susceptible to aphid attacks on soft spring growth, but these rarely cause lasting damage. The main concern is poor drainage leading to root rot, particularly in heavy soils or winter waterlogged conditions.

Seasonal Interest

  • Spring: Fresh new growth emerges with first fragrant blooms appearing in late spring

  • Summer: Peak flowering period with masses of scented blooms providing continuous colour

  • Autumn: Flowering often continues well into autumn with regular deadheading

  • Winter: Attractive evergreen foliage cushions maintain garden structure throughout winter

Hardy Zones and Regional Suitability

  • RHS Hardiness: H6 (Hardy in most of the UK, may need protection in severe winters)

  • Temperature Tolerance: Suited for temperate regions, fully hardy in most UK conditions

  • Regional Notes: Performs exceptionally well in chalky, limestone areas and coastal gardens

  • Challenging Conditions: Perfect for dry, alkaline soils, exposed positions, and drought-prone Mediterranean-style gardens

Dianthus 'Devon Cream' represents exceptional value for gardeners seeking reliable, fragrant perennial colour that performs consistently year after year. Its particularly long flowering season sets it apart from many other hardy perennials, whilst the delicious clove fragrance adds an extra sensory dimension to garden enjoyment. The combination of spectacular flowering, year-round evergreen structure, drought tolerance, and minimal maintenance requirements makes this an outstanding choice for both cottage garden enthusiasts and contemporary gardeners seeking low-maintenance, high-impact plants.

Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.

As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email orders@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

From late autumn onwards and dependant on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.

Alpines are a group of perennials that  generally grow in rocky conditions at high altitudes.

As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.

It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.

By using this simple guide and a little time, alpines can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
