Tulip Clusiana (Lady Tulip) Bulbs

Overview

Tulip Clusiana, affectionately known as the Lady Tulip or Candlestick Tulip, is a charming early-flowering species tulip that brings delicate elegance to spring gardens. These petite beauties are renowned for their distinctive star-shaped blooms and remarkable ability to naturalise, making them perfect for gardeners seeking low-maintenance, long-lasting colour.

Plant Characteristics

Flowers

The Lady Tulip produces exquisite pointed petals that create a distinctive star shape when fully open. The blooms are particularly striking with their creamy white interior and soft rose-pink exterior, creating a lovely two-toned effect. Each flower measures approximately 5-7cm across when fully opened, sitting gracefully atop slender stems.

Foliage and Height

These compact tulips reach a modest height of 15-25cm (6-10 inches), making them ideal for front borders, rockeries, and containers. The narrow, grey-green leaves emerge early in spring and provide an attractive backdrop to the delicate blooms.

Flowering Period

Tulip Clusiana typically flowers from March to April, depending on your local climate. As one of the earlier tulip varieties to bloom, it provides much-needed colour when many other plants are still emerging from winter dormancy.

Growing Conditions

Soil Requirements

These adaptable bulbs thrive in well-draining soil and are remarkably tolerant of various soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. They prefer neutral to slightly alkaline conditions but will perform well in most garden soils provided drainage is adequate.

Light Requirements

Plant in full sun to partial shade. Whilst they'll flower in shadier spots, the best flowering performance occurs in locations receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Climate Tolerance

Fully hardy in the UK, Tulip Clusiana bulbs require a cold winter period to flower properly. They're suitable for RHS hardiness zones H6-H7 and can withstand temperatures down to -20°C.

Planting Guide

When to Plant

Plant bulbs between October and December, before the ground becomes frozen. Earlier planting in October allows for better root development.

Planting Depth and Spacing

Plant bulbs 10-15cm deep (roughly three times the bulb's height) and space them 8-10cm apart. In containers, you can plant them slightly closer together for a fuller display.

Planting Tips

  • Choose a location with good drainage to prevent bulb rot

  • Add horticultural grit to heavy clay soils

  • Plant pointed end upwards

  • Water in well after planting, then avoid overwatering during dormancy

Care and Maintenance

Watering

Water moderately during the growing season. These tulips are relatively drought-tolerant once established and prefer drier conditions during their summer dormancy period.

Feeding

Apply a balanced bulb fertiliser in early spring as shoots emerge. Alternatively, top-dress with well-rotted compost annually.

After Flowering Care

Allow foliage to die back naturally for at least 6 weeks after flowering to enable the bulb to store energy for next year's display. Resist the temptation to cut back green leaves, as this will weaken the bulbs.

Naturalising

Unlike many hybrid tulips, Tulip Clusiana readily naturalises and will often self-seed in suitable conditions. This makes them excellent value for money as they'll provide years of enjoyment with minimal intervention.

Design Uses

Garden Applications

  • Rock gardens and alpine collections

  • Front of herbaceous borders

  • Naturalising in grass or woodland edges

  • Mediterranean-style plantings

  • Cottage garden schemes

Container Growing

Excellent for pots, window boxes, and small containers. Their compact size makes them perfect for balcony gardens and patio displays.

Companion Planting

Pairs beautifully with other early spring bulbs such as crocuses, dwarf daffodils, and grape hyacinths. Also complements early perennials like pulmonaria and hellebores.

Varieties and Similar Species

Tulip Clusiana 'Cynthia' offers slightly larger flowers with more pronounced pink colouring, whilst T. Clusiana var. chrysantha features golden-yellow blooms. For similar growing conditions, consider other species tulips like T. turkestanica or T. humilis.

Purchasing and Storage

Buy firm, plump bulbs from reputable suppliers. Avoid any that feel soft or show signs of mould. Store unopened packets in a cool, dry place until planting time. Once planted, these reliable performers should provide many years of spring beauty with minimal fuss.

Buying Bulbs from Jacksons Nurseries

Bulbs are supplied either in pre-packaged retail packs or in some cases they are loosly picked and sent bagged.
