Overview

Rose 'Mum In A Million', also affectionately known as 'Millie', stands as one of the most cherished roses in British gardens, combining the romantic appeal of old-fashioned blooms with the reliability of modern breeding. Bred by Poulsen of Denmark and introduced in 2005, this remarkable variety belongs to the prestigious Renaissance collection, renowned for their large, full blooms with an old-fashioned look and exceptional fragrance. The RHS Award of Garden Merit winner has earned its reputation as the perfect gift rose, delivering both emotional significance and outstanding garden performance.

Exceptional Flower Characteristics

The defining feature of 'Mum In A Million' is its stunning large, double blooms that radiate classic beauty and charm. The beautiful, shapely, cupped blooms display the distinctive quartered form reminiscent of heritage roses, with clear pink colouring that remains unfading throughout the season. Each flower measures impressively large, creating substantial visual impact whilst maintaining the refined elegance of classic hybrid tea form.

The blooms are well displayed individually and in small trusses on sturdy upright branches, ensuring maximum visual appeal from every angle. The profusion of large, well-scented flowers appears continuously for several months throughout the summer, creating a vibrant tapestry of colour that lasts from early summer through to late autumn.

Most remarkably, these magnificent blooms carry an exceptionally beautiful fragrance - a wonderfully strong, sweet rose fragrance that epitomises everything wonderful about traditional rose scenting. This moderate to strong fragrance makes it perfect for positions where the scent can be fully appreciated.

Robust Growth Habit and Size

'Mum In A Million' forms a strong, upright bush creating an ideal size for most garden situations. The good bushy growing habit develops naturally into an attractive, well-proportioned plant that supports the large flower displays effectively.

The strong, dark green, compact growth habit ensures the rose maintains its shape throughout the season whilst providing excellent support for the substantial blooms. This vigorous upright growth makes it particularly suitable for formal plantings and structured garden designs.

Outstanding Health and Disease Resistance

One of 'Mum In A Million's' greatest strengths lies in its superb health and excellent disease resistance. The dark green, glossy foliage remains healthy and attractive throughout the growing season, requiring minimal intervention from gardeners. Good disease resistance means less time spent on treatments and more time enjoying the spectacular blooms and fragrance.

This natural health and vigour, combined with the strong upright habit, makes 'Mum In A Million' an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a reliable, low-maintenance rose that delivers consistent performance year after year.

Continuous Flowering Performance

'Mum In A Million' delivers exceptional flowering performance with blooms in abundance from early summer and repeating flushes into late autumn. The repeat flowering nature ensures gardeners enjoy successive waves of the large, fragrant blooms from June through to September and often into November in favourable conditions.

Each flowering flush produces masses of the spectacular quartered blooms, ensuring continuous colour and fragrance throughout the growing season. Regular deadheading encourages ongoing production of fresh flower clusters, maintaining the outstanding display.

Growing Conditions and Care

Rose 'Mum In A Million' thrives in full sun positions where it can develop its most intense fragrance and maintain vigorous, healthy growth. It can be planted in the border, or potted up and placed on a sunny patio, demonstrating excellent adaptability to various garden situations.

Standard rose care practices apply: plant in well-drained, fertile soil, provide annual feeding with balanced rose fertiliser, regular watering during dry periods, and light pruning in late winter to maintain shape and encourage vigorous new growth. The naturally strong growth habit means minimal pruning is required.

Versatile Garden Applications

The exceptional qualities of 'Mum In A Million' make it suitable for numerous garden applications. The upright growth habit makes it outstanding for mixed borders, formal rose beds, and structured plantings where its substantial size creates excellent impact.

Excellent for cutting, the large, fragrant blooms make superb additions to floral arrangements and indoor displays. The flowers last for ages after being cut and added to a vase, bringing the rose's wonderful fragrance indoors. This makes it particularly valuable for gardeners who enjoy fresh flower arrangements.

Container Growing Excellence

'Mum In A Million' performs exceptionally well in container cultivation, making it ideal for patios, terraces, and smaller gardens. The strong, upright growth habit adapts well to pot culture, whilst the substantial blooms provide maximum visual and olfactory impact in limited space.

Use large containers with excellent drainage and high-quality John Innes No. 3 compost for best results. Container-grown plants will require more regular watering and feeding but reward with the same magnificent blooms and exceptional fragrance as garden-planted specimens.

Seasonal Interest and Wildlife Value

'Mum In A Million' provides substantial seasonal interest with healthy, glossy foliage emerging in spring followed by the spectacular blooms that continue from early summer through late autumn. The strong, upright growth maintains an attractive structure throughout the season, providing interest even between flowering periods.

The large, fragrant blooms attract beneficial pollinators to the garden, whilst the extended flowering season provides nectar sources throughout the growing period. The sweet fragrance is particularly attractive to evening pollinators and creates a wonderful sensory experience in the garden.

Perfect Gift Rose

As its name suggests, 'Mum In A Million' makes the perfect gift rose, combining sentimental appeal with practical garden excellence. The Mother's Day present she'll treasure for years to come, this variety creates lasting memories whilst providing ongoing garden pleasure. A beautiful gift rose that is sure to evoke feelings in anyone who plants it, making it ideal for commemorative plantings and special occasions.

Companion Planting

The pure mid-pink blooms of 'Mum In A Million' work beautifully with a wide range of companion plants. For elegant combinations, pair with purple or blue perennials such as lavender, catmint, or delphiniums that complement the pink tones. Silver foliage plants like artemisia or lamb's ear provide excellent contrast whilst enhancing the romantic appeal.

For cottage garden schemes, combine with other fragrant plants or soft-coloured perennials that won't compete with the rose's exceptional fragrance and classic beauty.

'Mum In A Million' holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, demonstrating its proven garden worthiness and exceptional performance in British conditions. This recognition places it among the elite of garden roses, ensuring gardeners can invest with confidence in a variety that has proven its outstanding qualities.

Help and Advice Aftercare

How our roses are supplied through the seasons

All our roses are cultivated in an open field and are carefully dug up when the weather is optimal, typically in October or November. While other nurseries supply roses bare root, once our field-grown roses have been potted up we supply them freshly potted. This better protects the roots and helps keep them moist in transit, ensuring your roses arrive as healthy as when they left our nursery. So don’t be alarmed if the compost comes away from the roots when you remove them from the pot.

Pointing at Graft of Rose after Removing from Pot

The roses can remain in their pots over the winter, as long as they are properly watered and fed, but it's best to plant them out as soon as possible. If you do plant them straight away make sure the planting mix is prepared first, hold the root close to the top of the hole as you tip the pot upside down and try to keep as much compost as possible from falling away. They will already be pruned, so no additional pruning is needed except for trimming any dead tips. Regular pruning can start in late winter, the year after planting.

Hybrid Tea roses are probably the most popular group of roses, available in both bush and standard form they have long flower stems and shapely blooms. Blooms are typically medium to large in size, with many petals which form a distinct central cone.

Floribunda Roses (FL)

Floribunda roses bears its flowers in clusters or trusses, with several blooms open at time in each truss. A popular choice the Floribunda rose group is unrivalled for colour, reliability and longevity as a bedding display however the flower form in generally inferior to the Hybrid Tea.

Patio Roses (PATIO)

Patio roses were introduced in the 1980’s and the group now contains several popular varieties. Generally low-growing roses that were once grouped with the Floribuna group but have now been put in their own group of compact versions. Usually growing about 50cm high they make excellent plants for patio containers or at the front of borders.

Climbing Roses (CLM)

Climbing roses as the name suggests are the perfect choice for covering a wall or screen. Often grouped together with Ramblers, Climbers tend to have stiffer stems, larger flowers but smaller trusses than Ramblers.

Rambling Roses (RAM)

Rambling roses are often grouped with Climbing Roses but the ramblers tend to have a more pliable stems that can be used to run along the soil to use as groundcover or can be used to make weeping standards.

Planting Advice

Roses like a generous root space, so dig a deep hole approximately twice as wide as the current root system, preferably adding composted organic matter to the soil. Never plant into frozen soil – in winter, await a frost-free period. Carefully remove the pot and gently tease the roots apart to spread them around the hole. Position the plant so that the ‘bud point’ (the place where the shoots emerge from, where the cultivated rose was grafted onto the rootstock) is at soil level. Replace the soil, firming it down gently, then water copiously. Ideally, a general purpose fertiliser should be applied to the surrounding soil as a top dressing. We also highly recommend the use of Rose Rootgrow, which provides a friendly fungus that prevents ‘rose replant syndrome’.

Buying our Roses

Pot Size

Most of our roses are supplied in a 4 litre pot although this may vary slightly depending on rose variety. If the size of pot differes significatly from 4 litres then we will make this clear somewhere on the product page.

Seasonality

Our roses are grown outdoors and as such are subject to seasonal changes. As we sell potted stock throughout the year your rose may not arrive and look like you expect it to. If you are uncertain how your rose will arrive (especially if buying for a gift) then we suggest you contact us prior to making a purchase.

Freshly Potted

Each year a new batch of roses is potted up ready for the following season. Once potted (usually November/December time) they go on sale as 'Freshly Potted'. If you purchase a freshly potted rose and plant it soon after you will find that when removing the rose from the pot there will be a lot of loose soil as the roots will not have had time to grow and bind the compost.

Rose Raised Ready to be Planted

Pruned/Cut Back

In autumn the majority of our roses have finished flowering and begin to look untidy, at this point we prune them quite hard in preparation for the following season. We continue to sell roses throughout the year, when a rose has been pruned in such a way we will identify it has being so. If you are not sure what to expect then please ask prior to making a purchase. Some garden centres/supermarkets sell stock that has been grown abroad or in poly-tunnels so they look 'picture perfect' out of season, while this is ideal for a gift they are short lived once planted.

Aftercare

Water regularly until established. In spring, apply a specialised rose fertiliser along with manure mulch, taking care to avoid direct contact of the mulch with the stems. In winter remove all branches which are dead, diseased or damaged along with any older stems as necessary to avoid overcrowding at the centre. Cut back new growth by about a quarter and prune side-shoots to within three buds of the main stem to encourage vigour. Prompt removal of ‘dead-heads’ will encourage further flowering.
