A compact, elegant evergreen shrub with glossy dark green foliage and distinctive burgundy-red stems that creates excellent screening and hedging with year-round appeal.
Prunus lusitanica 'Brenelia' is a sophisticated compact cultivar of Portuguese Laurel that combines elegant appearance with outstanding practical performance. This newer selection offers all the benefits of traditional Portuguese Laurel but in a more manageable, dense form perfect for contemporary gardens. With its distinctive burgundy-red young stems contrasting beautifully against glossy dark green foliage, this evergreen shrub provides year-round structural interest whilst delivering exceptional value as screening, hedging, or specimen planting. The plant's naturally compact growth habit and moderate growth rate make it ideal for both large and small garden spaces where reliable, low-maintenance evergreen presence is essential.
The outstanding characteristic of 'Brenelia' lies in its striking foliage display featuring larger, wavy-edged leaves that are more substantial than the standard Portuguese Laurel varieties. The glossy, dark green leaves create a lush backdrop whilst the conspicuous burgundy-red young stems provide dramatic year-round colour contrast that intensifies the plant's visual appeal. The compact, dense growth habit naturally forms an elegant pyramidal to rounded shape without excessive pruning, making it significantly more manageable than the species whilst retaining all the classic Portuguese Laurel characteristics that gardeners value.
This refined cultivar displays a naturally compact, upright growth pattern that develops into a dense, well-structured shrub or small tree. Mature specimens typically reach 3-5 metres in height with a spread of 2-3 metres, growing at a moderate pace that allows for easy management and shaping. The naturally dense branching creates excellent coverage from ground level upwards, making it particularly effective for screening applications. The regular, pyramidal growth habit requires minimal intervention to maintain its attractive form, though it responds excellently to pruning for formal hedging or topiary work.
From late May through early June, 'Brenelia' produces an abundant display of sweetly scented white flowers arranged in elegant clusters along the stems. These cup-shaped blooms create a spectacular contrast against the dark foliage and attract beneficial pollinators including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering period, the plant develops small red berries that ripen to black, providing additional seasonal interest and valuable food sources for garden wildlife. The flowers are highly fragrant, adding a delightful sensory element to the garden during the blooming season.
This adaptable shrub thrives in a wide range of soil conditions, performing best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil with good moisture retention. It shows excellent tolerance of various soil types and pH levels, adapting well to both slightly acidic and alkaline conditions. The plant performs optimally in full sun to partial shade positions, though full sun exposure enhances the intensity of the burgundy stem colouration. It demonstrates good tolerance of urban pollution and coastal conditions, making it suitable for challenging environments where other evergreens might struggle.
'Brenelia' demonstrates exceptional hardiness, capable of withstanding typical UK winter conditions without protection. This robust cultivar shows excellent resistance to frost, wind, and harsh weather conditions, making it suitable for exposed locations and challenging climates. The plant's tolerance of drought conditions once established, combined with its ability to withstand wet periods, makes it remarkably resilient across varying seasonal conditions. Its natural resistance to common environmental stresses ensures reliable performance year after year.
This low-maintenance shrub requires minimal ongoing care once established, making it perfect for busy gardeners and commercial landscapes. Water regularly during establishment, ensuring good soil moisture without waterlogging. Once mature, the plant becomes remarkably drought-tolerant and requires watering only during extended dry periods. Annual feeding with a balanced fertiliser in spring will enhance foliage quality and maintain vigorous growth. Pruning can be carried out in late spring or early summer after flowering, though the plant maintains its attractive shape naturally with minimal intervention.
'Brenelia' excels in numerous garden roles, demonstrating exceptional versatility in contemporary landscaping. As hedging, it creates outstanding formal or informal barriers that provide year-round privacy and structure whilst requiring less frequent trimming than faster-growing alternatives. For screening applications, its dense growth and attractive foliage make it ideal for concealing unsightly views or creating garden compartments. As a specimen plant, it provides excellent focal points and structural elements in mixed borders, whilst its compact size makes it suitable for smaller gardens where space is limited.
This cultivar adapts excellently to container cultivation, making it perfect for patios, terraces, and formal garden arrangements. The compact growth habit and attractive foliage provide excellent year-round interest in pot displays, whilst the manageable size prevents the plant from outgrowing its container too quickly. Container-grown specimens require regular watering during the growing season and benefit from annual feeding, though they should be protected from extreme winter conditions in exposed locations.
Throughout spring, the shrub produces fresh burgundy-red growth that contrasts beautifully with the established dark green foliage, creating a striking display of natural colour variation. Late spring brings the spectacular flowering display as clusters of fragrant white blooms cover the plant, attracting pollinators and filling the garden with sweet fragrance. Summer reveals the plant's lush, glossy foliage at its peak, providing excellent backdrop for other garden plants. Autumn and winter showcase the plant's evergreen nature as it maintains its structural presence and foliage quality throughout the dormant season.
Generally robust and trouble-free, 'Brenelia' demonstrates excellent natural resistance to common garden pests and diseases. The plant's healthy constitution and preference for well-drained conditions help prevent fungal issues, whilst its tough, waxy foliage resists damage from most garden pests. Occasional problems with aphids or scale insects can be easily managed with appropriate treatments, though healthy plants typically show good natural resistance to such issues.
The fragrant flowers provide an excellent nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators during the crucial late spring period. The subsequent berry production offers valuable food for birds, contributing to garden biodiversity and wildlife support. The dense evergreen foliage provides excellent nesting sites and shelter for small birds throughout the year, making this shrub an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
The rich dark green foliage and burgundy stems provide an excellent backdrop for a wide range of companion plants. The neutral foliage colour works beautifully with both bright and subtle colour schemes, whilst the formal structure complements both contemporary and traditional garden styles. It pairs particularly well with flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, and seasonal bulbs, providing year-round structure whilst allowing seasonal plants to take centre stage.
Prunus lusitanica 'Brenelia' represents the perfect evolution of the classic Portuguese Laurel, offering all the traditional benefits in a more compact, manageable form. The distinctive burgundy-red stems and wavy-edged foliage provide enhanced visual interest, whilst the dense, upright growth habit makes it ideal for contemporary garden applications. Combined with exceptional hardiness, excellent disease resistance, and minimal maintenance requirements, this outstanding cultivar delivers maximum impact with minimum effort. Whether used for formal hedging, screening, or specimen planting, 'Brenelia' offers gardeners a truly reliable performer that enhances any garden with its elegant appearance and dependable nature.
Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.
Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.
Planting and Conditions
Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.
Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.
One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.
Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.
Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.
Aftercare and Pruning
Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.
Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.
Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.
All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.
Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.
To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.
Potential Issues
Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.
This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.
To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
