Variegated grasses are those displaying multiple colours on their foliage, typically referring to sword-shaped leaves of evergreen grasses which are distinctly edged in a contrasting colour along the length of the leaf, although some variegated varieties such as the popular zebra grass have attractive horizontal stripes across the foliage. Variegation is a popular feature across the entire plants department and, in the case of grass plants, is appreciated for the additional colour and interest it can bring to their architectural forms. Most variegated grasses are evergreen and often of the carex, cordyline, hakone grass, miscanthus, pampas grass, phormium and yucca varieties. Carex Evergold is one of the best with elegant, arching, golden-yellow foliage edged bright green, lending itself to a formal border. It forms a dense tussock that spreads out slowly by short underground rhizomes. One of our favourites is Phormium Sundowner, a strongly upright tenax form of Phormium with bronze-green evergreen leaves with variegations of copper-red and dark bright pink margins.
