Hakone grass (Hakonechloa plants) is a handsome, eye-catching, clump forming ornamental grass with elegant, narrow, arching foliage, often variegated in vibrant shades of golden-yellow and lime green. It is a low-growing variety, typically reaching no more than 50cm tall, perfect for under-planting to add colour and interest below larger shrubs or edging paths and patio areas. It combines well with other whispy ornamental grasses in groups of odd numbers and, growing best in partial or dappled shade, can be combined effectively with hostas and other large-leaved perennials. It can also be used as a standalone focal point in the border or containers. Native to Japan, Hakone grass is a long-lived, touch ornamental that loves moist shady conditions, making it useful as a marginal plant to ponds and lakes too. The architectural flowers can be used in dried flower arrangements. Cut back faded foliage from the previous year before new growth starts in spring and mulch annually with well-rotted garden compost or manure.
