Distinctive Purple-Tinged Foliage

The outstanding feature of Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Midget' lies in its unique seasonal foliage colouration that transforms from attractive grey-green in summer to beautiful purple-bronze tones during winter months. The small oval leaves display distinctive wavy edges that add subtle texture to the dense foliage mass, whilst the seasonal colour variation provides continuous interest that changes with the seasons. This remarkable colour-changing ability makes it invaluable for gardeners seeking plants that provide different visual impact throughout the year whilst maintaining consistent evergreen structure.

Ultra-Compact Dense Form

The exceptionally compact growth habit creates perfect small-scale architectural structure that fits beautifully into restricted spaces and intimate garden settings. The dense, twiggy branching pattern naturally forms a neat mounded shape that maintains its precise form year-round, making it ideal for small gardens, rock gardens, and container cultivation where space is at a premium. The ultra-slow growth rate ensures the plant remains perfectly proportioned for many years without requiring regular pruning or size management.

Outstanding Winter Interest

This exceptional cultivar provides unmatched winter value through its beautiful purple-bronze foliage colouration that intensifies during cold weather, creating dramatic seasonal contrast when most other plants have faded. The evergreen structure combined with the winter colour transformation makes it particularly valuable for providing interest and structure during the dormant season, whilst the compact size ensures it works perfectly in winter container displays and small garden spaces.

Exceptional Small Garden Value

The ultra-compact size and naturally neat habit make 'Midget' one of the most valuable structural plants for small gardens, courtyards, and restricted spaces where traditional shrubs would be too large. The slow growth rate and naturally perfect form eliminate the need for regular maintenance whilst providing premium evergreen structure that anchors small plantings and creates focal points in intimate garden settings.

Premium Container Performance

The compact size, slow growth rate, and attractive seasonal foliage changes make this cultivar exceptionally well-suited to container cultivation, where it provides year-round structure with changing seasonal interest. The naturally drought-tolerant nature once established reduces watering requirements, whilst the compact root system makes it suitable for long-term container growth without frequent repotting.

Growing Requirements

  • Soil and Position: Thrives in well-drained soil conditions and tolerates a wide range of soil types from sandy to clay, providing drainage is adequate. Prefers full sun to partial shade where the foliage develops the best seasonal colour variation. Excellent coastal tolerance makes it suitable for seaside gardens, whilst good urban pollution tolerance ensures reliable performance in city conditions.

  • Light Requirements: Performs best in full sun to partial shade where the purple-bronze winter colouration develops most intensely. Some shade is tolerated but may reduce the intensity of the seasonal colour changes and result in slightly looser growth habit.

  • Soil Preferences: Adaptable to most soil types providing drainage is adequate. Tolerates both acid and alkaline conditions, making it suitable for a wide range of garden situations. Once established, demonstrates excellent drought tolerance, though benefits from watering during extended dry periods for optimal foliage condition and colour development.

Care and Maintenance

  • Pruning Requirements: Minimal pruning required due to naturally compact form and very slow growth rate. Light trimming in late spring if shape refinement is needed, though the natural form is usually perfect without intervention. Avoid heavy pruning which can spoil the natural mounded shape and may encourage uneven regrowth.

  • Watering Requirements: Water regularly during establishment to develop a strong root system. Once established, demonstrates excellent drought tolerance though benefits from watering during extended dry periods to maintain optimal foliage condition and enhance winter colour development. Container specimens require more regular watering, particularly during summer months.

  • Fertilising Programme: Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and maintain vibrant foliage colour. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which may encourage loose growth that spoils the compact form. Benefits from annual mulching to conserve moisture and suppress weeds around the compact root zone.

Design Applications

  • Rock Gardens: Outstanding for creating structure and year-round interest in rock gardens and alpine settings where the compact size and seasonal colour changes complement the naturalistic setting. The slow growth rate ensures it remains perfectly proportioned within rock garden compositions whilst providing essential evergreen structure.

  • Container Plantings: Ideal for containers where it provides year-round structure with changing seasonal interest. The compact size and slow growth rate make it perfect for long-term container cultivation, whilst the drought tolerance once established reduces maintenance requirements. Excellent for creating focal points in small spaces and patio gardens.

  • Low Borders: Perfect for front-of-border positions where the compact size and seasonal colour changes can be fully appreciated. Works beautifully as edging plants or for creating low structure in perennial borders whilst the purple-bronze winter colour provides interest when herbaceous plants have died back.

  • Small Garden Focal Points: Exceptional for creating architectural interest in small gardens and courtyards where larger shrubs would be inappropriate. The seasonal colour changes provide continuous interest whilst the compact size ensures it never outgrows its allocated space.

Seasonal Interest

  • Spring Emergence: Provides essential garden framework during spring with the compact evergreen structure anchoring emerging plantings whilst the foliage begins its transition from winter purple-bronze back to fresh grey-green, creating subtle seasonal variation that complements spring bulbs and early perennials.

  • Summer Presence: Maintains consistent grey-green foliage and compact form throughout summer, providing reliable evergreen structure and neutral backdrop for summer flowering plants. The small scale makes it perfect for intimate garden settings whilst the attractive foliage texture continues to provide visual interest.

  • Autumn Transformation: Begins the transition to winter colouration during autumn, with the foliage gradually developing purple-bronze tints that intensify as temperatures drop. This seasonal change provides valuable autumn interest whilst maintaining the essential evergreen structure as deciduous plants fade.

  • Winter Drama: Reaches peak winter colour with beautiful purple-bronze foliage that provides dramatic contrast against winter landscapes. The compact evergreen structure becomes particularly valuable during the dormant season whilst the rich winter colouration adds warmth and interest to cold-weather garden displays.

Hardiness and Reliability

Hardy in most UK locations with good cold tolerance and dependable garden performance. The winter foliage colouration actually intensifies in cold weather, making this cultivar particularly valuable in colder regions. Young plants establish quickly and demonstrate excellent resilience once established, with the reliable growth habit ensuring consistent performance year after year.

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.

Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Depending on the exact pot size and height it may be possible to get approximately 5 plants per pallet at no extra cost. The maximum height we can dispatch on a pallet is 2.0m, this includes the height of the pallet and pot.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

Planting and Conditions

Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.

Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.

Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.

Aftercare and Pruning

Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.

Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.

Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.

All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.

Potential Issues

Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.

This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.

To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
