Nepeta 'Kit Cat' is a charming and compact catmint variety that brings delightful colour and fragrance to any garden space. This hardy perennial is perfect for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance plant that delivers maximum impact with minimal fuss. Known for its neat, mounded habit and profuse lavender-blue flowers, 'Kit Cat' is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.
Compact Growth Habit: 'Kit Cat' forms tidy, rounded clumps reaching approximately 30-40cm in height and spread, making it ideal for smaller gardens, containers, or front-of-border plantings.
Extended Flowering Period: Produces masses of tubular, lavender-blue flowers from late spring through to autumn, providing months of continuous colour and interest.
Aromatic Foliage: Features small, grey-green leaves with the characteristic minty fragrance that gives catmint its name. The scented foliage adds another sensory dimension to your garden.
Drought Tolerant: Once established, this resilient plant thrives with minimal watering, making it perfect for water-wise gardens and low-maintenance landscapes.
Sunlight Requirements: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, though flowering is most prolific in sunny positions receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Soil Preferences: Adaptable to various soil types but performs best in well-draining, moderately fertile soil. Tolerates poor soils and slightly alkaline conditions exceptionally well.
Hardiness: Fully hardy in most UK climates (RHS hardiness rating H5), withstanding temperatures down to -15°C without protection.
Spacing: Plant 40-50cm apart to allow for mature spread and good air circulation.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, requires minimal watering except during prolonged dry spells.
Feeding: Benefits from a light application of general-purpose fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-feeding, which can reduce flowering and make plants leggy.
Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming. Cut back by one-third in late autumn or early spring to maintain compact shape and vigour.
Maintenance: Virtually maintenance-free once established. May benefit from division every 3-4 years to rejuvenate clumps.
Border Planting: Excellent for herbaceous borders, cottage gardens, and mixed plantings where its neat habit provides structure amongst more informal plants.
Container Growing: Perfectly suited to pots, window boxes, and container displays. Ensure adequate drainage and use quality multipurpose compost.
Wildlife Gardens: Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects, making it an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens.
Pathway Edging: The compact size and pleasant fragrance make it ideal for planting alongside garden paths where the aromatic foliage can be enjoyed.
Ground Cover: Plant in groups for effective, low-maintenance ground cover that suppresses weeds whilst providing colour.
'Kit Cat' pairs beautifully with roses, lavender, ornamental grasses, and other Mediterranean-style plants. It complements yellow and white flowers particularly well, creating striking colour combinations. Consider planting alongside Achillea, Echinacea, or Salvia for a stunning perennial display.
Pet Consideration: As with all Nepeta varieties, cats are naturally attracted to this plant and may roll in or nibble the foliage. While generally harmless, consider placement if you wish to preserve the plant's appearance.
Seasonal Interest: Provides excellent structure in winter gardens, with the dried flower spikes and foliage offering architectural interest even after the main growing season.
Cut Flowers: Makes an excellent addition to informal flower arrangements, adding fragrance and a cottage garden charm to bouquets.
This outstanding variety combines all the best qualities of catmint in a perfectly proportioned package. Its reliability, long flowering season, and minimal care requirements make it an invaluable addition to any garden. Whether you're creating a wildlife haven, establishing a low-maintenance border, or simply want a dependable perennial that delivers consistent results year after year, 'Kit Cat' is an excellent choice that will reward you with months of beautiful blooms and delightful fragrance.
Buying Perennials from Jacksons Nurseries
At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our perennials after flowering and trim them back at the end of the season to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.
As a result, depending on the time of year you buy perennials, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.
From late autumn onwards and dependent on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.

Perennials are described and classified differently by different gardeners but all would agree that they are plants that come into flower every year from early spring to late summer, the exact time dependent on variety and most die back to ground level in autumn and winter.
As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.
It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.
Always check eventual plant heights when planning borders to ensure that the taller plants are at the back (or at the centre of an island bed) followed by the medium and then smaller low growing plants.
Remember to deadhead perennials after flowering, trim back lightly in autumn as required to tidy the border and if necessary trim again in spring once the risk of heavy frost has passed.
If perennials get too big, start to flower less and less or if it seems to be dying off from the centre, consider dividing the plant but always check that the particular variety is happy to be divided and that you divide at the right time of year for the plant.
By using this simple guide and a little time, perennials can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
