Distinctive Shuttlecock-Shaped Blooms

The characteristic, shuttlecock-like flower shape of Helenium Moerheim Beauty, with prominent central cone, is sure to keep your late summer borders full of colour, well into the autumn. The brown velvety central knobs are surrounded with rich orange-red petals when fresh, fading to amber, effective over many weeks.

Extended Flowering Season

Long established cultivar with the many dark centred orange red flowers being produced over a long period from mid summer onwards. The coppery-red flowers start blooming in late summer and continue for a month or more. This extended blooming period ensures continuous garden interest when many other perennials have finished flowering.

Unique Flower Structure

Quite unlike any other daisy flower shape, tall strong stems hold the characteristic blooms. Moerheim Beauty's daisy-like blossoms have prominent chocolate cones that are rich in pollen and attract butterflies.

Robust Growth Habit

Makes compact, self-supporting bushy plants, much branched, crowded with autumnal-coloured flowers. This hardy plant can grow up to 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide, providing a bold pop of colour in the garden for several months.

Exceptional Pollinator Appeal

The flowers are attractive to bees and are useful for cutting. This hardy perennial is loved by bees and butterflies. The prominent chocolate centres are rich in pollen, making them particularly valuable for garden wildlife.

Award-Winning Reliability

Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society, ensuring this variety has proven garden performance and exceptional reliability for British gardeners.

Perfect for Mixed Borders

Looks stunning planted in mass, mixes beautifully with ornamental grasses or any other perennial plants. Well suited for borders, cottage gardens. Sneezeweed is tall, and is great for filling gaps in borders and adding height. It looks particularly good with grasses.

Excellent for Cutting Gardens

The flowers are useful for cutting, making this variety perfect for creating beautiful autumn flower arrangements. With its attractive foliage and long-lasting blooms, Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' is a great choice for borders, cutting gardens, and containers.

Late Season Garden Essential

Don't get caught out with a colour-less, late summer garden - Helenium actually flower much later in the summer, so are excellent for extending the season of colour! This makes it invaluable for maintaining garden interest through autumn.

Soil and Position

Grow Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. To thrive, Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' needs a spot that receives full sun to partial shade, ideally with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.

Moisture Requirements

Grow in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun. Intolerant of dry soils. Keep moist—water regularly and do not allow soil to dry out. For best results, plant helenium in full sun and moist soil.

Seasonal Care and Management

  • Spring Care: Mix in a balanced organic fertilizer when planting and topdress with an inch of compost in spring. Plants will not reach their final height until their second year.
  • Height Management: To restrict their size, cut back to about 30cm tall in May. Plants may be cut back in early July (at least 6 weeks before normal flowering) to reduce height.
  • Fertilisation Guidelines: Avoid overfertilization which may cause plants to grow too tall. Over-fertilization can lead to leggy growth, where you'll notice tall, spindly stems that struggle to produce blooms.
  • Spacing Requirements: When selecting a location, consider spacing; adequate room between plants promotes air circulation and healthy growth. Plant 5-7 plants per square metre for best effect.

Contemporary Garden Design

Popularized by Piet Oudolf, this variety has become a staple in contemporary naturalistic garden design, particularly in prairie-style and new perennial plantings.

Seasonal Structure

The tall, strong stems and distinctive flower shape provide excellent structural elements in late summer borders, whilst the extended flowering season ensures continuous visual impact through the autumn months.

Companion Planting

When planning your garden, consider the height of your plants. Helenium typically grows up to 3 feet tall, so choose companion plants that either match or complement this height for a balanced look.

Safety Information

Caution: contains some toxic elements. Handle with care and consider placement away from areas where children and pets play.

Seed Head Interest

Like many daisies, Helenium still look great when the petals fall because the seed heads are like little globe structures on the end of stems. This provides additional autumn and winter interest.

Why Choose 'Moerheim Beauty'?

Helenium Moerheim Beauty is a choice variety, with copper-red flowers. This hardy perennial is loved by bees and butterflies, and is the proud holder of an RHS Award of Garden Merit, so comes highly recommended as a reliable garden plant.

An old favourite that has proven its worth in British gardens, 'Moerheim Beauty' offers the perfect combination of late-season colour, exceptional pollinator value, and reliable performance. Its distinctive copper-red blooms with chocolate centres create a sophisticated autumn display that extends the garden's seasonal interest well into the cooler months, making it an indispensable addition to any perennial border seeking sustained colour and wildlife appeal.

Buying Perennials from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our perennials after flowering and trim them back at the end of the season to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.

As a result, depending on the time of year you buy perennials, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

From late autumn onwards and dependent on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.

During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Perennials are described and classified differently by different gardeners but all would agree that they are plants that come into flower every year from early spring to late summer, the exact time dependent on variety and most die back to ground level in autumn and winter.

As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.

It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.

Always check eventual plant heights when planning borders to ensure that the taller plants are at the back (or at the centre of an island bed) followed by the medium and then smaller low growing plants.

Remember to deadhead perennials after flowering, trim back lightly in autumn as required to tidy the border and if necessary trim again in spring once the risk of heavy frost has passed.

If perennials get too big, start to flower less and less or if it seems to be dying off from the centre, consider dividing the plant but always check that the particular variety is happy to be divided and that you divide at the right time of year for the plant.

By using this simple guide and a little time, perennials can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
