Growth Characteristics

The densely branched habit with bushy upright form makes this variety particularly valuable for mixed borders, specimen planting, and garden applications where substantial seasonal impact and architectural presence are essential. The ovate dark green leaves are tinged purple and pink in autumn, creating an exceptionally attractive backdrop throughout the growing season that perfectly complements both the delicate flowers and spectacular berry displays whilst maintaining excellent vigour and distinguished appeal. The well-branched structure ensures reliable fruiting whilst creating substantial visual impact that fits perfectly into diverse garden settings, with the manageable size making it ideal for prominent positions, mixed borders, and feature locations where its distinguished beauty and seasonal value can be fully appreciated without overwhelming spaces.

Flowering and Fruiting Performance

Throughout the summer season, 'Magical Snowstar' delivers exceptional flowering displays that continue reliably from June to July, followed by outstanding berry production from October through December. The plant produces small lovely pink flowers in summer consistently, creating impressive foundation for the spectacular berry display with exceptional performance that ensures ongoing garden distinction and extended seasonal interest. The individual flower clusters develop into magnificent berry arrangements, allowing gardeners to appreciate the perfect snow-white colour sophistication and glossy finish richness, whilst the exceptionally abundant berry production ensures impressive presence for extended periods throughout the autumn and winter months. The reliable fruiting nature with excellent persistence characteristics ensures magnificent displays throughout the dormant season, with the ongoing sparkling white berries providing persistent focal points that enhance garden spaces with their distinctive pristine palette and architectural appeal.

Growing Conditions

'Magical Snowstar' thrives in any fertile, well-drained garden soil in full sun or partial shade, growing best when positioned in sunny locations where autumn foliage colour is enhanced whilst maintaining excellent berry production and seasonal performance. The Callicarpa adapts excellently to various garden situations and performs brilliantly in mixed borders, specimen positions, and contemporary garden spaces where the white berries can create maximum seasonal impact. For best performance, plant in sunny locations with good drainage and adequate space for the mature size, as full sun positions reward gardeners with enhanced purple and pink foliage tints in autumn. Fruits best when grown in groups with at least two plants needed to ensure pollination and berry production, making it particularly suitable for diverse garden situations where its seasonal qualities and snow-white berry intensity can be celebrated with proper growing conditions and companion planting.

Hardiness and Disease Resistance

'Magical Snowstar' demonstrates excellent resilience characteristics with outstanding performance in UK growing conditions, maintaining healthy vigorous growth throughout all seasons with remarkable reliability and seasonal excellence. This winter hardy deciduous shrub shows excellent hardiness with superior cold tolerance, making it dependable for gardeners seeking robust seasonal plantings and extended winter interest. The attractive foliage remains healthy throughout the growing season with good disease resistance, changing from dark green through purple and pink autumn tints, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking dependable plantings with exceptional seasonal transformation. The hardy nature ensures consistent performance across different growing conditions and seasonal changes, supporting reliable berry development and extended winter display performance.

Care and Maintenance

'Magical Snowstar' benefits from pruning at the end of winter to encourage new stems and maintain shape for optimal flowering and berry production, as it produces berries on current year's growth. Apply balanced shrub fertiliser in early spring, with regular watering during dry periods to support the healthy vigorous growth and abundant berry development. The good disease resistance and natural vigour mean this variety requires minimal intervention with standard care practices, making it ideal for gardeners seeking reliable plantings with distinguished seasonal impact. The densely branched nature requires minimal maintenance beyond occasional shaping, whilst the reliable fruiting performance ensures spectacular displays with minimal garden intervention for maximum seasonal reward and architectural garden value.

Garden Applications

'Magical Snowstar' excels in mixed border displays, specimen features, and seasonal interest plantings where its innovative beauty and substantial seasonal presence can be fully appreciated. The brilliant snow-white berries make it ideal for white-themed garden schemes, autumn and winter features, and sophisticated landscapes where distinctive seasonal impact and extended interest are essential. The vigorous growth and exceptional berry production make it particularly suitable for creating stunning focal points in larger gardens, whilst the manageable size and distinguished nature ensure it provides impressive presence where its distinctive berries create spectacular garden interest and vital winter habitat.

Wildlife Value

'Magical Snowstar' provides excellent wildlife value for autumn and winter bird interest, though the berries are initially avoided by birds due to their bitter flavour, ensuring extended garden display before eventual consumption when other food sources become scarce. The berry clusters serve as important late-season food sources during challenging winter months, making valuable contributions to garden wildlife support. The extended berry persistence from October to December provides crucial resources throughout the winter period, making it invaluable for supporting wildlife when natural food sources are limited. The robust branching structure and berry abundance make it perfect for wildlife gardens, natural landscapes, and garden areas where substantial wildlife support and visual appeal can be provided with contemporary garden sophistication and proven environmental benefits.

Seasonal Interest

Throughout the garden year, 'Magical Snowstar' provides exceptional seasonal interest with extended displays and outstanding architectural performance. Spring brings the emergence of fresh dark green foliage and strong new vigorous growth, building anticipation for the flowering season ahead. Summer showcases the delicate lovely pink flower clusters whilst the attractive foliage provides excellent backdrop for companion plantings. The magnificent autumn transformation brings both spectacular purple and pink foliage colour and the emergence of brilliant snow-white berries that maintain their sophisticated appeal throughout winter, creating consistent seasonal impact and essential garden framework when colour is most precious and valued.

Cut Flower Excellence

'Magical Snowstar' features exceptional value for cut flower arrangements, with the sparkling white berries providing sophisticated indoor displays that complement both contemporary and traditional arrangements. The berry branches can be cut for the vase and last well in arrangements, hanging onto the bare stems long after the last leaf has fallen, making this Callicarpa particularly valuable for seasonal decorating, special occasions, and indoor displays where both visual beauty and long-lasting interest are desired. The snow-white berries add exceptional seasonal appeal whilst making this variety suitable for florists and garden enthusiasts where luxurious seasonal materials contribute to memorable arrangements, particularly for autumn and winter celebrations where the distinctive pristine berries create lasting sophisticated impressions and seasonal elegance.

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.

Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email sales@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

* Please Note: Shrubs in 20 litre pots and above might require a pallet delivery starting at £79.99 per pallet. Depending on the exact pot size and height it may be possible to get approximately 5 plants per pallet at no extra cost. The maximum height we can dispatch on a pallet is 2.0m, this includes the height of the pallet and pot.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

Planting and Conditions

Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.

Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.

Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.

Aftercare and Pruning

Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.

Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.

Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.

All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.

Potential Issues

Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.

This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.

To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
