Evergreen Structure: Maintains its rich, dark green colour throughout all seasons, providing consistent visual impact even in winter months.
Pre-Shaped Excellence: Arrives professionally trained and clipped into a perfect ball shape, eliminating years of waiting and shaping work.
Versatile Placement: Equally suited to containers, borders, formal gardens, or as accent pieces in contemporary landscapes.
Low Maintenance: Once established, requires minimal care beyond annual trimming to maintain its shape.
Hardy & Resilient: Extremely tolerant of various soil conditions, pollution, and challenging weather, making it ideal for British gardens.
Botanical Name: Taxus baccata
Common Names: English Yew, Common Yew
Mature Height and Spread: Can be maintained at any size you prefer with annual pruning
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate (10-15cm per year)
Foliage: Dense, needle-like, dark green leaves
Hardiness: Fully hardy (RHS H7) - withstands temperatures to -15°C and below
Sunlight Requirements: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Tolerates deep shade better than most evergreens, though growth may be slower in very dark positions.
Soil Preferences: Extremely adaptable to most soil types including clay, loam, chalk, and sand. Prefers well-draining soil but tolerates both dry and moist conditions once established. pH tolerance ranges from acidic to alkaline.
Watering Needs: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once mature, very drought tolerant and requires watering only during extended dry periods.
Climate Tolerance: Exceptionally hardy and suited to all UK climate zones. Tolerates coastal conditions, urban pollution, and exposed positions.
Best Planting Time: Plant from autumn through to early spring when the soil is workable and not frozen.
Container Planting: Use a substantial pot at least 50cm wide with good drainage holes. Use quality multi-purpose compost mixed with garden soil.
Garden Planting: Dig a hole 15x the width of the root ball but no deeper. Ensure the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil surface.
Pruning: Trim annually in late summer (August-September) to maintain shape. Little and often is better than severe cutting. Use sharp, clean secateurs for best results.
Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Well-established plants typically require minimal feeding.
Mulching: Apply a 5cm layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it away from the stem to prevent rot.
Pest and Disease: Generally pest and disease free. Occasionally affected by scale insects, which can be treated with horticultural soap.
Formal Gardens: Perfect for creating symmetrical designs, flanking doorways, or marking garden transitions.
Contemporary Landscapes: Provides structural contrast against softer plantings and ornamental grasses.
Container Displays: Excellent in large planters for patios, terraces, or balconies where space is limited.
Seasonal Interest: Pairs beautifully with seasonal bedding plants or bulbs planted around the base.
Toxicity Warning: All parts of Taxus baccata are highly poisonous to humans and animals if ingested. The berries are particularly attractive to children and should be removed if safety is a concern. Not recommended for gardens frequently used by young children or where livestock may have access.

Buying Topiary from Jacksons Nurseries
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team.
