Optimal Planting Times
Primary Season: Autumn (September-November) for best root establishment
Secondary Option: Spring (March-May) with careful summer water management
Container Plants: Year-round planting possible in suitable weather conditions
Step-by-Step Planting
Choose a location with appropriate drainage and light conditions
Dig a planting hole 3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper
Ensure the root ball surface remains level with the surrounding soil
Carefully remove from container and gently tease apart any circling roots
Position centrally and backfill with mixture of native soil and well-rotted compost (2:1 ratio)
Install sturdy stake if needed to support the standard form during establishment
Water thoroughly to settle soil and eliminate air pockets
Apply 10cm layer of organic mulch, keeping clear of the main stem
Establishment Support
Standard-form trees typically require staking for 18-24 months until the root system develops sufficient anchorage to support the top-heavy structure independently.
Watering Strategy
First Year: Regular, deep watering essential for establishment
Established Trees: Moderate water requirements; reasonably drought tolerant
Container Specimens: Consistent moisture monitoring crucial, especially during summer months
Seasonal Adjustment: Reduce watering frequency in autumn/winter but avoid complete drought
Nutrition Programme
Annual Feeding: Apply balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring (March)
Container Plants: Monthly liquid feeding throughout growing season (April-September)
Organic Enrichment: Annual application of well-rotted manure or quality compost
Variegated Plant Care: Occasional high-potash feed enhances leaf colour and variegation stability
Pruning and Shape Management
Timing: Late summer (August-September) after flowering but before berry display peaks
Crown Maintenance: Light, regular trimming to maintain perfect spherical shape
Stem Cleaning: Remove any unwanted shoots growing from main trunk
Tool Requirements: Sharp, clean secateurs or professional topiary shears
Frequency: 1-2 careful sessions annually to maintain crisp definition
Seasonal Care Calendar
Spring: Apply fertiliser, increase watering, assess winter damage, light pruning if needed
Summer: Monitor water needs, main shaping session, pest inspection
Autumn: Prepare for berry season, reduce feeding, gradual watering reduction
Winter: Minimal intervention, enjoy berry display, plan next year's care

Buying Topiary from Jacksons Nurseries
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible.
