Overview

Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' is an award-winning dwarf flowering cherry that brings exceptional beauty to gardens through its remarkable zigzag branching structure and spectacular spring blossom display. This compact deciduous shrub showcases masses of delicate pale pink buds that open to pure white flowers with red centres, creating an enchanting cloud of blossom on bare branches in early spring. With its unique twisted stems, compact size, and brilliant autumn colour, this exceptional cherry provides year-round architectural interest and seasonal drama that makes it perfect for small gardens, containers, and as a stunning specimen plant.

Key Features

The outstanding feature of 'Kojo-no-mai' lies in its distinctive zigzag branching pattern that creates a sculptural framework reminiscent of a natural bonsai. The wiry, slightly contorted stems burst into life in late winter and early spring with masses of pale pink buds that open into an amazing display of pure white flowers with striking red centres. These delicate, paper-thin blossoms appear before the leaves emerge, creating a spectacular cloud of blossom that covers the entire plant. The small, dark green leaves have serrated edges and provide excellent autumn colour, turning vivid shades of orange and red before falling.

Growth Characteristics

This slow-growing shrub displays a naturally compact, dense habit with uniquely twisted branches that create exceptional architectural interest even when not in flower. Mature plants typically reach 1.5-2 metres in height with a spread of 1.5-2.5 metres, developing into an attractive rounded shrub with distinctive zigzag branching. The slow to moderate growth rate and naturally compact form make it ideal for small gardens, courtyards, and containers where space is limited but maximum impact is desired.

Flowering Performance

From March to April, 'Kojo-no-mai' produces one of the most spectacular spring displays of any small garden plant. The profusion of single flowers emerge from crimson buds as delicate pale pink blossoms that fade to pure white with striking red centres. These charming flowers appear to dance around the twisted branches, creating an enchanting display that lasts for several weeks. The flowers appear on bare stems before the leaves emerge, ensuring maximum visual impact and creating a truly magical spring spectacle.

Growing Conditions

This versatile shrub thrives in any moist but well-drained soil, performing best in full sun positions where it will produce the most abundant flowering display. It adapts well to various soil types including chalk, clay, loam, and sand, provided drainage is adequate. The plant tolerates partial shade but flowers most prolifically in sunny locations. It shows good tolerance of urban pollution and coastal conditions, making it suitable for a wide range of garden situations.

Hardiness and Climate Tolerance

'Kojo-no-mai' demonstrates exceptional hardiness, capable of withstanding temperatures down to -20 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for even the coldest UK locations. This robust shrub shows excellent tolerance of harsh weather conditions and is fully hardy throughout the UK. The plant's natural mountain habitat origins contribute to its remarkable resilience and ability to thrive in challenging conditions.

Care and Maintenance

This low-maintenance shrub requires minimal care once established, making it perfect for busy gardeners. Water well during the first few months after planting and during dry spells, particularly in summer. The plant benefits from annual mulching with well-rotted compost to retain moisture and provide nutrients. Pruning should be carried out lightly in summer after flowering, removing only dead, diseased, or crossing branches. The plant tolerates harder pruning if required to maintain size and shape.

Garden Applications

'Kojo-no-mai' excels as a specimen plant where its unique branching structure and spectacular spring blossom can be fully appreciated. In mixed borders, it provides excellent structural interest and seasonal drama, creating a stunning focal point when in flower. The compact size makes it perfect for small gardens, courtyards, and rockeries where space is limited. Its architectural qualities make it ideal for Japanese-style gardens and contemporary landscaping schemes where form and structure are important.

Container Growing

This shrub is exceptionally well-suited to container cultivation, making it perfect for patios, balconies, and formal arrangements. The slow growth rate and compact habit make it ideal for pot culture, where it can be maintained at a smaller size for many years. Container growing also allows the plant to be positioned for maximum impact during the flowering season. Regular watering and annual repotting will maintain healthy growth and flowering performance.

Seasonal Interest

Throughout winter, the distinctive zigzag branching structure provides exceptional architectural interest, creating a living sculpture that adds drama to the garden even when dormant. Spring brings the spectacular flowering display as masses of pale pink and white blossoms cover the bare branches, creating one of the most enchanting sights in the garden. Summer sees the emergence of fresh green foliage that complements the interesting branch structure, whilst autumn brings brilliant orange and red leaf colour that provides a second season of spectacular display.

Bonsai Potential

The naturally compact growth habit, interesting branching structure, and tolerance of pruning make 'Kojo-no-mai' an excellent choice for bonsai cultivation. The plant responds well to training and can be maintained as a miniature tree for many years, making it perfect for enthusiasts wanting to create authentic Japanese-style bonsai displays.

Pest and Disease Resistance

Generally robust and trouble-free, 'Kojo-no-mai' may occasionally be affected by silver leaf disease, bacterial canker, or aphids. However, these issues are typically minor and can be managed with good garden hygiene and appropriate care. The plant's natural vigour and hardiness mean it generally maintains good health with minimal intervention.

Wildlife Value

The early spring flowers provide valuable nectar for emerging pollinators at a time when few other food sources are available. Bees and other beneficial insects are attracted to the accessible flower structure, making this shrub an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. The timing of the flowering display makes it particularly valuable for supporting early pollinator populations.

Why Choose 'Kojo-no-mai'?

Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' represents the perfect combination of unique architectural interest, spectacular seasonal display, and compact garden-friendly size. The distinctive zigzag branching creates year-round sculptural interest, whilst the spectacular spring blossom display provides one of the most enchanting sights in the garden. Combined with excellent hardiness, low maintenance requirements, and suitability for containers, this award-winning shrub delivers exceptional garden value. Whether used as a specimen plant, container feature, or focal point in mixed borders, 'Kojo-no-mai' offers gardeners a truly special plant that combines the beauty of Japanese cherry blossom with the practicality needed for modern garden spaces.

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.

Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

Planting and Conditions

Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.

Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.

Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.

Aftercare and Pruning

Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.

Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.

Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.

All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.

Potential Issues

Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.

This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.

To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
