Primula Beesiana

Primula beesiana, commonly known as the "Tibetan primrose", is a hardy perennial native to the moist, cool slopes of the Himalayas. This charming plant brings early spring colour with its clusters of bell-shaped flowers in shades of purple and pink. Perfect for shady or woodland areas, it thrives in moist, well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for damp, partially shaded corners of the garden. Easy to grow and maintain, Primula beesiana is a great addition for anyone looking to brighten up spring borders, bog gardens, or shady spots.

Key Features

  • Botanical name: Primula beesiana

  • Common name: Candelabra primrose

  • Plant type: Hardy herbaceous perennial

  • Height: 50cm (1.6ft)

  • Spread: 50cm (1.6ft)

  • Flowering: Clusters of purple-pink flowers bloom in early spring, often from May to June

  • Bright green, crinkled leaves form a rosette at the base

  • Ideal for moist, well-drained soils in partial shade to full shade

  • Hardy: Hardy in the UK down to temperatures of -15 degrees Celcius (RHS hardiness rating H6)

  • Attractive to early pollinators such as bees and butterflies

Growth & Habit

Primula beesiana has a clump-forming growth habit, with large, crinkled leaves that create a neat rosette at the base. In spring, it sends up sturdy stems topped with rounded clusters of nodding, tubular flowers in shades of pink to purple, each with a yellow eye at the centre. The blooms rise above the foliage, offering a striking display of early seasonal colour.

Planting Advice

  • Position: Prefers partial to full shade, making it ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or areas with dappled sunlight.

  • Potted: grown in pots can be planted at any time of the year providing the ground is not frozen or waterlogged

  • Soil: Best suited to moist, fertile, well-drained soils. It thrives in slightly acidic to neutral pH, and can tolerate wetter conditions such as damp or boggy areas.

  • Planting Depth: Plant so that the crown of the plant is level with the soil surface. Ensure the roots are well-established, and water in thoroughly.

  • Spacing: Space plants 30–45 cm apart to allow for their spreading habit and to ensure good air circulation.

Plant in spring or autumn to give roots time to establish before flowering.

Care & Maintenance

Primula beesiana is a low-maintenance plant that thrives with little attention. Regular watering is important, especially in dry spells, as it prefers consistent moisture. This makes it a great choice for bog gardens or moist, shaded corners where other plants might struggle. Apply a layer of mulch in spring to help retain moisture during the hotter months and protect the roots in winter.

Uses in the Garden

  • Ideal for shady, moist borders, woodland gardens, or near streams and ponds

  • Adds spring interest in damp, difficult areas where other plants may not thrive

  • Works well in combination with other early bloomers like Corydalis, Epimedium, and Pulmonaria

  • A lovely addition to containers, especially those in cooler, shady spots

  • Provides valuable nectar for early pollinators

If you're looking to add early-season colour to a shaded corner of your garden, Primula beesiana is a perfect choice. Its attractive, bell-shaped flowers and ability to thrive in moist, cool conditions make it an ideal plant for woodland gardens, bog gardens, and other damp, shady spots. With minimal care and its lovely spring blooms, Primula beesiana is a rewarding and easy-to-grow perennial for any gardener.

Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.

As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.

Availability: Stock availability figures are provided as a guide only. There is a delay between orders being placed and the plants being gathered by our pulling team. During this time it may be possible for a member of the public to purchase these plants from our Garden Centre, while this is rare it is a possibility and we will notify you of any problems as soon as possible. This figure may also include plants that have not yet be flagged as unsaleable.

Pre-order: Pre-order times are given as a guide only and may vary dependent on the growing season. Orders containing Pre-ordered products will be shipped as a single order when all items become available. Large orders may be part shipped, please contact us on 01782 502741 or email orders@jacksonsnurseries.co.uk.

From late autumn onwards and dependant on variety, there may be very little visible above the soil except for a few cut back dormant leaves or stems. It is perfectly normal for dormant plants to look like this from autumn onwards, they will however burst back into life in spring.

Alpines are a group of perennials that  generally grow in rocky conditions at high altitudes.

As for all plants, soil preparation is time well spent. Dig over the area to be planted ensuring that the ground is free draining. If not then you may wish to either consider planting in a different spot or raising the level of the planting area by adding additional topsoil, well rotted garden compost and/or well rotted manure. Add ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ fertiliser or a high potash fertiliser to encourage good root growth and development.

It’s always a good idea to plant a few of the same plant together, we recommend planting in 3’s or 5’s to provide a bold effect but allowing them plenty of room to develop.

By using this simple guide and a little time, alpines can make an absolutely spectacular difference to your garden.
