Amelanchier plants
Amelanchier are bushy shrubs or small trees best renowned for their delightful spring blooms and beautiful autumn foliage colour. Between March and April, before Amelanchier comes into leaf, the bare branches become draped with showy racemes of pleasantly scented, five-petaled white blooms. The elliptical leaves also display stunning vibrant autumn foliage colours, turning from rich green to various shades of red, orange and gold. The fiery autumnal foliage is complimented by an abundance of highly decorative edible berries, which can be used for making preserved or pie fillings or provide a treat for birds. Low maintenance and easy to grow, Amelanchier has many common names including June berry, service berry, shadwood, shadblow and shadbush. It makes a good tree for a small garden, rarely exceeding 5 metres tall and varying in shapes from globular shrubs to small trees.
