Plants for woodland garden

Woodland occupies around 13% of the land area of the UK, equivalent to millions of hectares of land, so it’s no surprise that many woodland plants have made their way into our gardens. Plants for a woodland garden should aim to create a simple, naturalistic appearance. If you have in your garden a shady border with large shrubs or trees over the top casting a shadow for most of the day, it’s essentially mimicking a wood, so you can choose woodland plants that will thrive in it. The idea conditions for a woodland garden is an open, loose soil, so if you have a heavy or sandy soil, incorporate plenty of well-rotted leaf mould or bark chippings when planting to provide the required growing conditions. You don’t need to live next to a wood to create a woodland style garden. You can use woodland plants like ferns with their high versatile, ancient and mysterious leaf shapes, perennials like foxglove with their tall, distinctive spikes of beautiful tubular flowers above evergreen foliage and ivy as ground cover to bring colour and interest to bare patches of ground.
