Spectacular Variegated Foliage Display

The crown jewel of Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Penmarch' is its breathtaking variegated foliage that provides constant visual drama throughout the year. Each small oval leaf is beautifully marked with cream and pale yellow margins that contrast brilliantly against the deep green centres, creating a luminous effect that brightens garden areas and adds sophistication to plantings. The distinctive wavy edges add textural interest whilst the variegated pattern creates a tapestry of light and colour that transforms ordinary garden spaces into sophisticated landscape features.

Compact Elegant Growth Habit

The naturally compact and upright growth habit creates perfect architectural structure that fits beautifully into medium-sized gardens and container displays. The dense, twiggy branching pattern naturally forms an elegant columnar shape that maintains its attractive form year-round, making it ideal for formal plantings, architectural features, and container cultivation where structured elegance is required. The slow to moderate growth rate ensures the plant remains perfectly proportioned whilst developing its full variegated potential.

Outstanding Coastal Performance

This exceptional cultivar demonstrates remarkable coastal tolerance, making it invaluable for seaside gardens where many plants struggle with salt spray and coastal conditions. The variegated foliage maintains its brilliant colouration even in challenging coastal environments, whilst the naturally compact habit provides excellent wind resistance. The reliable coastal performance combined with the stunning foliage makes it perfect for creating sophisticated seaside garden displays.

Exceptional Container Value

The compact size, slow growth rate, and stunning variegated foliage make 'Penmarch' exceptionally well-suited to container cultivation, where it provides year-round structure with continuous colour interest. The naturally drought-tolerant nature once established reduces watering requirements, whilst the compact root system and elegant form make it suitable for long-term container growth in prominent positions where the variegated foliage can be fully appreciated.

Premium Architectural Impact

The combination of compact elegant form and stunning variegated foliage creates exceptional architectural value for gardens seeking plants that provide both structure and colour. The naturally neat habit eliminates the need for regular pruning whilst the variegated leaves create focal points that draw the eye and add sophistication to garden compositions, making it ideal for contemporary garden designs and formal landscape schemes.

Growing Requirements

  • Soil and Position: Thrives in well-drained soil conditions and tolerates a wide range of soil types from sandy to clay, providing drainage is adequate. Prefers full sun to partial shade where the variegated foliage appears most vibrant and the cream margins develop their best colouration. Excellent coastal tolerance makes it outstanding for seaside gardens, whilst good urban pollution tolerance ensures reliable performance in city conditions.

  • Light Requirements: Performs best in full sun to partial shade where the cream variegation appears most luminous and the contrast between cream and green is most pronounced. Some shade is tolerated but may reduce the intensity of the variegation and result in slightly less compact growth habit.

  • Soil Preferences: Adaptable to most soil types providing drainage is adequate. Tolerates both acid and alkaline conditions, making it suitable for a wide range of garden situations. Once established, demonstrates good drought tolerance, though benefits from watering during extended dry periods for optimal foliage condition and variegation intensity.

Care and Maintenance

  • Pruning Requirements: Minimal pruning required due to naturally compact form and moderate growth rate. Light trimming in late spring if shape refinement is needed, though the natural form is usually attractive without intervention. Remove any plain green shoots that may appear to maintain the variegated character. Avoid heavy pruning which can encourage reversion to plain green foliage.

  • Watering Requirements: Water regularly during establishment to develop a strong root system and support the energy requirements of variegated growth. Once established, demonstrates good drought tolerance though benefits from watering during extended dry periods to maintain optimal foliage condition and enhance variegation quality. Container specimens require more regular watering, particularly during summer months.

  • Fertilising Programme: Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and maintain vibrant foliage variegation. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which may encourage plain green growth that lacks the attractive variegation. Benefits from annual mulching to conserve moisture and suppress weeds around the root zone.

Design Applications

  • Mixed Borders: Outstanding for creating year-round structure and colour interest in mixed shrub borders, particularly effective when planted alongside purple and bronze-leaved plants that complement the cream variegation. The compact habit makes it suitable for mid-border positions where the variegated foliage creates continuous focal points.

  • Container Plantings: Ideal for containers where it provides year-round structure with spectacular foliage displays. The compact size and elegant form make it perfect for flanking doorways, creating patio focal points, or defining outdoor living spaces. The variegated foliage creates sophisticated container displays that work beautifully in contemporary garden settings.

  • Coastal Gardens: Exceptional for seaside gardens where the excellent salt tolerance and wind resistance ensure reliable performance whilst the variegated foliage creates luminous highlights that complement coastal landscapes. Perfect for creating structure in coastal plantings whilst providing year-round colour interest.

  • Architectural Features: Perfect for creating formal structure and sophisticated focal points in contemporary garden designs. The elegant columnar form and stunning variegated foliage make it ideal for framing views, creating entrance features, or adding architectural interest to modern landscape schemes.

Seasonal Interest

  • Spring Elegance: Provides essential garden framework during spring with the compact evergreen structure and bright variegated foliage creating immediate impact that anchors emerging plantings whilst complementing spring bulbs and early perennials. The cream variegation appears particularly luminous in spring light.

  • Summer Brilliance: Maintains consistent variegated foliage quality throughout summer, providing reliable evergreen structure and continuous colour interest that doesn't compete with seasonal flowers. The cream and green pattern creates sophisticated backdrop for summer plantings whilst the compact form provides essential garden structure.

  • Autumn Reliability: Provides essential structure and colour continuity whilst many other plants fade, with the variegated foliage maintaining its attractive appearance and bright contrast. The evergreen presence becomes particularly valuable as deciduous plants lose their leaves and the variegated pattern provides continued interest.

  • Winter Illumination: The variegated evergreen structure provides essential winter interest and garden framework, with the cream and green foliage creating bright highlights against winter landscapes. The compact elegant form becomes particularly architectural during the dormant season whilst the variegated pattern adds warmth and sophistication to cold-weather displays.

Hardiness and Reliability

Hardy in most UK locations with good cold tolerance and dependable garden performance. The variegated foliage maintains its attractive colouration throughout winter, making this cultivar particularly valuable for year-round colour. Young plants establish well and demonstrate excellent resilience once established, with the reliable growth habit ensuring consistent variegated displays year after year.

Mature Size Expectations

Typically reaches 1.5-2m in height and 1-1.5m in spread, developing into an elegant columnar shrub with dense branching structure. The slow to moderate growth rate allows for excellent garden planning whilst ensuring the plant develops its full variegated potential within a reasonable timeframe. The mature size makes it suitable for medium-sized gardens and substantial container displays.

Buying Shrubs from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we sell a variety of shrubs both evergreen and deciduous with a variety of flowering times throughout the year. At certain times of the year our shrubs you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website when deciduous leaves have fallen, the shrub has finished flowering or has been trimmed back.

Some leaves on evergreen shrubs can be damaged in winter by frost or harsh winds but in spring new leaves will readily replace those damaged. This is quite normal on many evergreen varieties and is preferable to plants grown with excessive protection that show cold shock once planted out and establish less satisfactory initially.

Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

Planting and Conditions

Container grown shrubs can be grown at any time of year. It is a little known fact that shrubs planted in the autumn and winter will be easier to look after than those planted in the spring and summer, because they will have time to establish and become hardy in the cooler months.

Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established.

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining.

Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot.

Aftercare and Pruning

Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out.

Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer.

Shrubs also benefit from mulching in order to supress weeds, conserve moisture and provide vital nutrients. Mulch also greatly improves soil conditions. Shrubs can be mulched in late winter, after fertiliser has been applied, but it can be mulched through autumn to late spring as long as the ground is damp.

All shrubs benefit from dead-heading once spent flowers become apparent. Rhododendrons and Lilac especially benefit from the removal of dead flowers.

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

To control reversion, remove reverted shoots promptly to discourage them. Reverted shoots are usually much more vigorous than the variegated ones, and thus should be completely pruned out and cut back into wood containing variegated foliage.

Potential Issues

Although shrubs are usually very robust garden plants, they can sometimes start to decline with no apparent or obvious reason.

This will start with browning leaves, which could indicate plant stress due to lack of water or waterlogging, an establishment failure or, in the worst case scenario, honey fungus. Another cause of leaf browning is a high salt content in the soil. This could be a natural occurrence, especially if you live near the ocean, or it could be from over fertilisation.

To remedy a high salt content, cut back on fertiliser and step up your watering regime for the next few weeks. If you live by the ocean, this will be harder to remedy—but stepping up your watering will help to wash some of the salt away all the same.
