The Photinia 'Carré Rouge' standard lollipop tree is a stunning ornamental feature plant that brings year-round colour and architectural interest to gardens, patios, and entranceways. With its distinctive rounded canopy perched atop a 50cm clear stem, this elegant specimen offers a perfect blend of formal structure and vibrant seasonal displays that will transform any outdoor space.
This remarkable variety showcases brilliant red new growth that emerges in spring and autumn, gradually maturing to glossy dark green foliage. The neat, lollipop-shaped crown sits proudly on a clean 50cm stem, creating an eye-catching focal point that's particularly effective when used in pairs to frame doorways, paths, or gateways. The compact form makes it ideal for smaller gardens where space is at a premium, while its manageable size ensures it remains accessible for everyday gardeners to maintain.
Photinia 'Carré Rouge' thrives in full sun to partial shade, though the most vibrant red colouration develops when the plant receives plenty of sunlight. It's remarkably adaptable to most soil types, provided they're well-drained, and will flourish in both acid and alkaline conditions. Once established, this hardy evergreen demonstrates good drought tolerance, though regular watering during prolonged dry spells will keep it looking its best.
The plant is fully hardy in the UK, tolerating temperatures down to approximately -15°C, making it suitable for most British gardens. It performs particularly well in sheltered positions where it's protected from harsh winter winds that can damage the foliage.
When planting your lollipop tree, choose a location that allows you to appreciate its sculptural form from multiple angles. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate plenty of organic matter to give your plant the best start. Ensure the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil surface, then water thoroughly after planting.
During the first growing season, water regularly to help establish a strong root system. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage colour. A 5-7cm layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it clear of the stem itself.
One of the great advantages of the standard lollipop form is its relatively low maintenance requirements. Light pruning in late spring, after the main flush of new growth has hardened off, will help maintain the neat spherical shape of the canopy. Simply trim back any wayward shoots and shape the crown to keep it looking tidy and balanced.
Remove any shoots that appear on the clear stem promptly to preserve the clean, formal appearance. If you're new to pruning, don't worry – photinias are forgiving plants that respond well to trimming, so you can confidently shape your tree with sharp, clean secateurs.
The Photinia 'Carré Rouge' lollipop tree excels in formal and contemporary garden designs. Use them as sentinel plants flanking entrances, plant them in decorative containers on patios or terraces, or position them along pathways to create rhythm and structure. They work beautifully in Mediterranean-style gardens and provide an elegant alternative to bay or box standards.
In mixed borders, the clear stem allows underplanting with spring bulbs, seasonal bedding, or low-growing perennials, maximising your planting space whilst adding vertical interest. The evergreen nature ensures your garden maintains structure and colour throughout winter when many other plants have died back.
Spring brings the most dramatic display when bright red new shoots emerge, creating a striking contrast against the mature dark green foliage. Small clusters of white flowers may appear in late spring, adding delicate charm to the bold foliage. Throughout summer, the glossy leaves provide a handsome backdrop for other garden plants. Autumn often triggers a second flush of colourful new growth, extending the period of interest before the plant settles into its winter evergreen display.
With the 50cm stem, the overall height typically reaches 1.2-1.5 metres, with a canopy spread of approximately 60-80cm when mature. This makes it perfect for smaller spaces or for creating a sense of enclosure without overwhelming the garden. When planting multiples, space them 1-1.5 metres apart for individual specimens, or closer for a more formal hedge effect.
This beautifully structured lollipop tree offers both immediate impact and long-term value, providing years of reliable colour and interest with minimal fuss – perfect for the everyday gardener seeking maximum effect with manageable maintenance.
Buying Topiary from Jacksons Nurseries
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
